Citing the tough economic times, Topps announced today it will be shutting down Wizkids. For those who came in late, Wizkids was the studio that made the first clicky-base game MageKnight, and then was able to spin off the concept into their most successful game, HeroClix. They had a string of other clicky-base games, the construct-a-ship game Pirates of Spanish Main, various collectible card games, a board game or two, and a few other miscellaneous products. Topps purchased Wizkids in 2003 (when founder and game genius Jordan Weissman left).
Captain America gets a Director
The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the First Avenger: Captain America movie now has a director, Joe Johnston. Johnston was the director of Jumanji and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, but probably most importantly one of my favorite movies The Rocketeer! I say this is the most important because this Captain America movie is supposedly […]
Are you ready to ROCK?
Thoughts on the official 4e D&D Bard, comparisons to the other 4e Bards recently released, and a look back on old 4e speculation.
Mean Things I Have Done in Horror RPGs
Had a PC’s longtime girlfriend seduced by a butt-ugly vampire. Replaced a resurrected PC with his evil twin… permanently. (As a result of this) Force said evil twin into working with the PCs after he was disowned by the rest of his doppelganger crew. Killed a PC’s roommate, brought him back as a Frankenstein’s Monster. […]
And also, the end of the D&D Miniatures game
As Graham points out, Scott Rouse (brand manager for D&D) made a post on Wizards yesterday that explains the changes. To me, the most important part of the whole thing is: November’s release of Demonweb will be the last new set that includes skirmish statistics… official sanctioning of D&D Miniatures skirmish events will cease right after D&D Experience in February. I […]
May The DPS Be With You
IGN calls it “one of the worst kept secrets in the industry“, but the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO was announced at a huge event yesterday. Details are still scarce, but like any number of other MMOs, you can join the Good Guys or the Bad Guys, with some potential moral grays. (“For the […]
The end of “fully randomized” D&D Miniatures
All my scoop sources just lit up with this announcement: D&D Miniatures, after the next set, will no longer be sold in completely random boosters. According to the release, there will be “D&D Heroes” sets that will be sold in packaging that makes all the figures visible, so you already know what you’re getting. Each […]
D&D Starter Set Released
The new D&D Starter Set has been released, providing a simple entry into the world of D&D for new or lapsed player, and coincidentally, making a great gift in time for the holidays. (If I had young relatives who were interested in D&D, I’d definitely get one of these for them.) According to the Previews […]
D&D Insider Now Available for Purchase (and New EULA)
Those of you who want to buy D&D Insider now have your chance to subscribe and get access to Dragon, Dungeon, bonus tools, and the Compendium (which I had more opportunities to work with over the weekend, and discovered a few issues in the content.) I’ll be purchasing mine later on in the evening, partially […]
The more things change…
I have read the system – it’s a pretty nice system – but it’s no more a new edition of Dungens and Dragons than a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a revision of a 1940s Willys Jeep. The problem lies in its being called something it is not – a new edition of an existing […]
