Inq. of the Week: You Got Science in my Fantasy

July 13, 2009 by Dave

We heard a lot of complaints that psionics just don’t fit with the D&D milieu. Even for a die hard fan such as myself, it can be hard to justify mental powers (that in other media are often linked to “the next stage of evolution” and other scientific/pseudo-scientific concepts) as part of the D&D world. Dark Sun was a world custom built for psionics, as all the other alternatives for fantastic powers had some issues.

Product Tie-in Video Games 101: A Lesson in Love and Paychecks

July 10, 2009 by guest

Today we’re going to be discussing one of the biggest money makers for video game studios; Product Tie-ins. They are something that we’ve been accustomed to in video games, and all can form a general consensus when we hear their name said. From E.T. to Chronicles of Riddick, video games based on movies have been around for most of your brief gaming lives. When did they start? Were they always bland and overpriced?

4E: Psion – by the Numbers

July 8, 2009 by Bartoneus

Yesterday saw the introduction of Wizards of the Coast’s new ‘preview’ content roll out for the PHB3, starting with a build for the new Psion class and an article with developer commentary on the new class and the inclusion of the Psionic power source into 4th Edition. Of particular interest to me is the fact that introducing a new, and relatively different, mechanic to the game has caused many to instantly decree imbalance and broken status upon the class.

Inq. of the Week: How Caffeinated?

July 6, 2009 by Bartoneus

We’ve had a lot of Origins 2009 coverage over the last week, and on Saturday celebrating the 4th of July Dave and I realized that GenCon is only a few weeks away. This realization makes me ponder what keeps me going through such hectic times, and more often than not the answer always comes back to caffeine. I’ve been a huge soda fiend since middle school, and even though my day job has stopped buying soda but still provides coffee, I just can’t bear switching over!

Origins 2009: Exhibit Hall in Words, Pictures, and Sounds

July 2, 2009 by Dave

One of the biggest draws of any big game convention is the exhibit hall, and Origins is no exception. This year saw a return to using the entirety of the exhibit hall for booths. There’s always plenty for gamers to spend their hard earned cash on, and this year saw a number of new releases, as well as some hidden gems recommended to me by other show-goers that may have been around previously.

Origins 2009: Monte Cook “Being A Better Game Master”

June 26, 2009 by Dave

When asked to sum up the essence of being a game master, Monte often responds with something smart-alek like “everything I know could fill up a book… and so I did and WotC published it.”

Transformers 2: Expectations?

June 24, 2009 by Bartoneus

In what is a rare occurence for my wife and I, we did not go to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at a midnight showing last night. It’s not because of the Tuesday night issue, we went to see The Dark Knight at midnight on a Wednesday (though the day of work afterward was very tough), and it’s definitely not an issue of us not being excited about it. Honestly I can’t tell you why for sure, maybe it’s because we’re finally getting a bit more mature (or lazy).

Inq. of the Week: Quinto vs. Quinto

June 22, 2009 by Bartoneus

A while back, over two years ago it seems, we had an epic showdown Inquisition between Ian McKellen and Ian McKellen…errr, I mean between Gandalf the White and Magneto! The mysterious White Wizard ending up kicking considerable ass in the poll, but it generated some interesting debate about who would actually win in a fight.

Mining the 4E “Eberron Player’s Guide”

June 17, 2009 by Bartoneus

If you’re an Eberron fan and a 4th Edition player than there’s really no doubt that you’ve picked up the Player’s Guide today or are planning on picking it up in the next few days. I’m going to leave reviewing this book to other people this time, though I do recommend going over to Geek’s Dream Girl and checking out a selection of early questions that she answered about what’s in the book, instead what I’m going to present are the reasons why everyone who doesn’t already own this book is going to want to buy it!

Inq. of the Week: Challenging Skills

June 16, 2009 by Dave

The dragon found them flying through the skies aboard a flying Dwarven pirate airship and threatened to destroy the ship if they didn’t toss the heroes overboard. They found their powers mostly useless against the creature, and scrambled to improvise other alternatives aboard a the ship. Firing at the creature’s wings, ordering the pirates into a better sense of organization, searching the hold for something useful, and finally, firing a Deva riding a barrel of rum attached with a chain to an anchor at the dragon using twin ballistas.
