Preview & Review: “Primal Power”

October 18, 2009 by Bartoneus

Late last week, with a copy of Primal Power in hand, I decided to give people a chance to preview the book by asking questions that I would answer on Twitter as well as at our page on Facebook. Below I’ll share most of the questions and answers from those, but first I’d like to offer a quick review of the book.

Leveling Up As An Inexperienced DM

October 15, 2009 by Bartoneus

I still consider myself an inexperienced DM. the 4th Edition campaign that I’m currently running has just passed twenty adventures and is the longest campaign I’ve ever run. Hell, it was the longest game I’ve ever run when it hit ten adventures back in May.

Inq. of the Week: Gaming Women

October 12, 2009 by Dave

Conventional wisdom and surveys show that women are in the minority among gaming groups of all kinds, but I think the ratio is starting to shift. We touched on the issue almost three years ago (to a bit of controversy) but I’d like to pose a slightly less loaded question…

Our Ladies of Sorrow: Modern Gaming, Scary Women

October 9, 2009 by Dave

I’m always on the lookout for solid modern adventures. But many of them fall into the more cinematic style where everyone is an action hero, spy, or both, thus making the subset of adventures I’m looking for even smaller. That’s why I was happy to be provided with a review copy of Our Ladies of Sorrow, a new adventure collection for Call of Cthulhu RPG by Miskatonic River Press.

Inq. of the Week: RPGs in Various Flavors?

October 5, 2009 by Bartoneus

I’ve really enjoyed reading Dave’s posts about his 4th Power project and adapting the 4E D&D system to a modern setting game as well as the comments on those posts, but it’s started me thinking about the genres of RPG that people play and in addition to that the settings we play in as well.

Making Your 5×5 Campaign Plan Into A Grid

September 30, 2009 by guest

Maybe it’s the gamer in me but when I first read the post title “The 5×5 Method” I immediately visualized a grid. When I read Dave’s post, I got that feeling but it seemed more like a tree than a grid with branches flowing from one another and even sometimes intersecting.

Inq. of the Week: Tell Us Your Critical Hit Story

September 29, 2009 by Dave

We’re coming up on our 4th anniversary this week (expect our usual yearly wrap-up this Thursday), and this year, we thought we’d do something fun. At gaming conventions this year, we asked our interview subjects about their favorite critical hit story (from any game.) We got some great responses, and will be typing those up this week, but we’d like to open the floor to you!

Review: “Fantasy Craft”

September 25, 2009 by The Main Event

Fantasy Craft is a D&D 3.0 OGL full-service RPG that boasts a robust set of classes, innovative and interesting feats, and a refreshing skill-based system of spell casting. With systems for item crafting, downtime for players, acquisition of holdings, prestige, and reputation it fills a gap that many have criticized as absent from the current 4.0 rules set.

Inq. of the Week: Tears or tiers?

September 22, 2009 by Bartoneus

I have a small handful of polls that creep back into my consciousness every year or two and the few that I’ve done multiple times before have been very enlightening. On that note I’m bringing back a poll that I last ran in March of 2008…
