Railroading in a Good Way

January 20, 2010 by Bartoneus

The term ‘railroading’ usually sends a shiver down the spine of any tabletop RPG player because of the negative implications that come along with it. To be honest, most DMs dislike the term as well and railroading is generally referred to as a problem with an RPG.

Winners and Losers in D&D

January 19, 2010 by dixontrimline

I want my players to succeed. I really do. I want them to have that spectacular moment. I want them to stare down the ferocious, slathering monster, and say, “Wrong, hellish beast. This is where your reign ends. Prepare to die.” And I want them to win that fight.

Only… only…

“King of RPGs” – King of Viral Marketing?

January 15, 2010 by Dave

Post updated with a response from Jason Thompson, the author, at the end of this post. Last September, I received an application to the RPG Bloggers Network (back when I was head-honcho) for a blog called “Theo Dudek, Ultimate Dungeon Master.” Aside from being a bit over the top- as many game masters tend to […]

Comic Books, Franchises & Reboots Oh My!

January 13, 2010 by Bartoneus

Allow me to take you on a small adventure through my life of the last few months. With more spare time than I’ve had in the last six years and a cornucopia of neglected hobbies crying out for attention, trying to choose what to do next can be rather difficult.

I Hate Magic Items

January 12, 2010 by Dave

Here’s the thing I’ve come to realize: I don’t like magic items period. Sure, they are a staple of fantasy literature. And I have a soft spot for certain classes of magical items, like the strange artifact or consumable item that has to be used at just the right time. +1 Swords? Fiery Platemail? Rings of Jumping? Never a fan.

2009 Retrospective on 4e: The Reality of the Relationship

January 6, 2010 by The Main Event

The honeymoon with 4e is over. 4e and I spent our days in bed cooing softly in one another’s ear, and now it’s time to take stock of the situation. It’s time to codify my biggest gripes about 4e.

Changing the Way We Think About Published Adventures

January 5, 2010 by Dave

Published adventures are an area that has always, always bugged me. That’s one big reason that I never really got into running them, and even today, I’m much more likely to hack them apart and steal what I want then run them out of the book. Part of that is I’ve felt like they don’t do their job quite well enough: communicate everything you need to know to run the adventure with minimal prep time and minimal disruptions while running it.

Inq. of the Week: So This Is A New Year

January 4, 2010 by Dave

As we roll into the new year, there are two important questions here. One is an open-ended question, to which you will have to answer in a full comment: what are some of your predictions for the coming year? The other is multiple choice, and I assure you, of vast importance.
