The psychology of desire and attachment defines our lives in countless ways. This fact is true even in the roleplaying games. Every character you play is an extension of you and the desires you want to fulfill by playing. More elusive, though, is real attachment–emotional connection–to a game’s goings on.
Mailbag 1 – Character Contortion
Here’s the first question from the mailbag. Jon Hixson asks: “How do you deal with players new to 4e who want to run characters that the system doesn’t support?”
PLAY D&D NOW, MY LORD
One of the hottest new games out on the web today is Evony. I need not go into how it is amazing. It pretty much speaks volumes about itself. Truthfully, I’m not really sure why anyone would play anything but Evony. Just in case you have not ascended to the next level of gaming, I bring to you several ways you can bring a little of the light and goodness that is Evony to your D&D game until you decide to catch up with the rest of humanity.
What Does Not Kill You
When I was sitting in my room, working out the battles, it all seemed so easy, so clean, so antiseptic. The party needed so many thousand experience points, so I divided that amount by the number of encounters remaining, spent my budget to buy the monsters, and then we’ll all roll initiative. Somewhere in all that preparation, I forgot about evaluating for fun.
We Are the Champions: DM Challenge at Pax East 2010
As you may have heard by now, I won the DM’s Challenge, put together by WotC on the Saturday of Pax. For weeks, since it was announced, ChattyDM and I have been trash talking and hyping each other up about the event. For a while, I was worried that the event wouldn’t run due to lack of participants. My Love Affair With Tron
I grew up with the movie Tron. Okay, I’ll admit that I grew up with a lot of movies, but there is a shorter list of movies that I watched at least once a year for my entire life up to the age of 18. Tron is most certainly on that list, along with Aliens, […]
Emergence & Reentry
Hello everyone! I’m Chris Sims, former Wizards of the Coast designer and editor. You might know me from my editing work on the 3e D&D game (Rules Compendium), my design work for the 4e game (Martial Power, MM, MM2, and so on), or from D&D Insider. I’m joining my friends here at Critical-Hits, because I enjoy talking, thinking, and writing about games and generally geeky stuff.
Crafting Your Adventure
How about that for a title? It’s pretty audacious, acting like I’m about to deliver some sort of authoritative how-to guide. The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that a better title would be, “Crafting MY Adventure,” and still better, “Crafting This One Adventure Once.”
E11 – 4e Gritty Heroic Roleplay
Cap the level at 11, only gaining new feats and upgrading powers, to make for a more gritty heroic 4e experience.
Monstrous Races in 4E D&D – Githyanki
In the Dragon article that previewed the githzerai race from the upcoming Player’s Handbook 3, the designers stated that the githyanki were not being developed as a PC race due to their villainous nature and they feel the drow has taken up the available real estate for a villainous race in 4th Edition.
