Back on Sunday, November 18th we participated in a streamed match of 5th Edition Team Deathmatch, our team (Dave The Game, Direflail, Chris Sims, and myself) was up against the excellent team from Cheaper by the Dungeon and it was an incredibly fun evening of killing, joking, and telefragging (oh…so much telefragging). What’s 5th Edition Team Deathmatch, you ask? It is a different way to use the 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons rules for a completely different, but ridiculously fun, experience. Here’s how they explain it on their Kickstarter page:
This game is an action RPG about strengthening the bonds you already have with the friends in your gaming group, or forming new bonds of friendship, in the face of shared adversity and the greatest challenge. Nothing beats the thrill of coming together to defeat a seemingly insurmountable foe. 5TDM doesn’t pull any punches. It puts you through the wringer and lets your group emerge closer to each other than ever. It is competitive, but not toxic.
5th Edition Team Deathmatch has 5 days left in its Kickstarter campaign, I’m personally thrilled that it has funded but there are still some stretch goals that I would love to see reached. Especially an arena designed by Sersa Victory (@sersa_victory) would be something particularly excellent to see in print! So if you’re at all intrigued by the idea of Player versus Player (PvP) fast paced, often hilarious, and intense D&D gameplay please check it out.
I was familiar with 5TDM before this event, but it wasn’t until we started talking characters ideas and strategies as a team and I started building my own 3rd level character (with a bonus feat) that I really started to appreciate this new way of experiencing 5th edition D&D. The choice to use only 3rd level characters is a very smart choice, though I would love to see it expanded with more level options in the future (I always love options for higher level stuff). The addition of a bonus feat for 3rd level characters ended up being one of the most difficult and interesting decisions I made during character creation. As you can see in the video below, I also managed to take a feat that is likely overlooked more than not (Athlete) and use it to get a huge advantage based on the specific arena we were fighting on, which featured several 20′ raised platforms, so being able to climb at full speed allowed Tank, my tortle battle master fighter, to skip the staircases and get right to the powerful siege weapons. I also loved seeing hyper focused character concepts, such as Chris’ paladin that didn’t even bother choosing spells because he only planned on using spell slots for the paladin’s smite ability.

Hopefully you ignored the tweets in our sidebar that totally spoil the outcome of that match…still, it’s worth watching and was so fun to play!
