Our unofficial mascot here at Critical Hits, since nearly the beginning, has been the powerful combination of an Umber Hulk riding a Bulette. These creatures, not traditionally known for their teamwork, came together from an in-joke in a game years ago as the ultimate burrowing killing machine, and we’ve just kind of run with it.
When 4th edition came out, we updated it for the new designs. Then we had our own version made.
And now, I am proud to present, a preview of the 5th edition version of the Bulette (click for full size):
It burrows! It bites! It leaps! All of your bulette needs are served.
And if you want to see its partner in crime, check out Dread Gazebo’s preview.

Who’s there?
Landshark!
Drinky McDrinkleton says
Boo-lay, Boo-lette, or Byou-lette?
Shiney McShine says
Bull-ette. Like a female bullet.

That was a topic of much conversation this weekend. My group has been doing it wrong, for sure.
Scott M. says
According to the only pronunciation I’ve ever seen (in the 2nd edition Monstrous Manual) it was “boo-lay”. My perfect version of any Monster Manual would be a full pronunciation guide. I’d like to think that would stop the second most common argument amongst players.
Cory Trego-Erdner says
Yay! I illustrated that monster. Just going to toot my own horn a little bit here.
Bartoneus says
Awesome, great work!
Dave says
Agreed, fantastic work Cory.
Marc says
Beautiful art!
There better be fluff about how to make shields from it’s hide though 🙂
