Earlier this year, I went to the movie theater with my son and we ended up playing a little of D&D with made up rules. You can see the game here, including the now legendary Troll who can’t build a bridge encounter. When I came back from Gen Con a few days ago, I told […]

Congratulations to Obsidian Portal and Kobold Quarterly
The winners of the 2009 Ennies for Best Website, Kobold Quarterly took the silver and Obsidian Portal took the gold. Congratulations to them both: while I would have loved to have won, they both definitely deserve it. I read Kobold Quarterly whenever I get a chance, and I used Obsidian Portal extensively for my last D&D 3.5 campaign (and planning on using it more) and it really is awesome.
Primal/Within Chronicles: Say it with Tentacles, Part 2
See part 1 here. Setting up the Fight This is going to be a weird game report because the fight that I will get into shortly, is pretty much all that happened in the game, with some dream sequence before and a bit of story and scary stuff after. So I’ll spend a few minutes […]

“Do You Want To Date My Avatar”, the incredibly catchy music video by the folks at The Guild.
Inq. of the Week: Cataclysm?
This passed weekend was Blizzcon ’09 which came with a slew of new announcements from everyone’s favorite delayed publishing game company. (Yes, I’m still bitter about Starcraft: Ghost – No, I will not let it go until StarCraft 2 actually comes out.) Chief among the announcements was the third expansion for World of Warcraft which is called Cataclysm, and looks to offer a huge overhaul to the entire game and the world it takes place in.

Critical Hits Podcast #15: Interview with Keith Baker
The last of our podcast interviews from GenCon 2009, Keith Baker, creator of Eberron, sat down to talk to us about working on the new campaign setting, how the 4e races, classes, and rules fit in to Eberron (including some great examples of re-fluffed characters to fit the setting), and about traveling the world and […]
Critical Hits Podcast #14: Interview with James Wyatt
Our informal, off-the-cuff “guerrilla” interview with James Wyatt at GenCon 2009. (We spoke to him last year as well). Joining Bartoneus and myself as interviewers was Jared from Head Injury Theater. James talks about Eberron, the art process in a WotC project, lots and lots about DMG2 (including the secret chapter name, “D&D as an indie game”), his characters, and D&D with his son.
Review: “Dragon Magazine Annual”
When WotC announced that the venerable Dragon and Dungeon magazines were becoming digital-only offerings, the reaction was controversial. The magazines are only available in PDF, and to subscribers of the D&D Insider service. There is still no way to get the magazines without a subscription to the whole package of DDI. Not too long after the details shook out it was revealed that some of the content would be reprinted in Annuals. Dragon Magazine Annual is the first of these collections.
Critical Hits Podcast #13: Interview with Andy Collins and Bruce Cordell
At GenCon 2009, we talked with Andy Collins and Bruce Cordell, two of the design team at Wizards of the Coast. We talk about monks kicking butt, how power sources are primarily a story invention, psionics psionics psionics, what races make good psionic characters, and more. We also try and get them to declare that […]
