Happy new year everyone!
I’m sitting at home on the evening of the 31st, getting ready to churn out another multi-hundred words post.
Last year I did a list of objectives of the things I wanted from my blog, my personal life and my DMing.
Like I said back then, I don’t believe in resolutions, they imply that we ‘have’ to do something and does not mean that we ‘want’ to do it. I believe in setting goals and working at them continually.
Last year I gave myself quite a list. Surprisingly, I met (and surpassed) several. Others, like writing NANOWRIMO and getting an ENnies nomination didn’t pan out, but I’m proud of what I have achieved.
Oh well, at least I tried!
So here’s what I have planned for this year.
Online Presence:
- Re-capture and Maintain what this blog is about: Chatting about DMing, RPGs and geek stuff in general in an enthusiastic and welcoming atmosphere.
- Reduce number of weekly posts to an easier to manage number
- Encourage new writing talent to flourish and get decent exposure to give them a little push toward the addictive bliss that is being read and appreciated.
- Attend Gen Con 2009 and spend almost all my time playing and networking!
- Publish at least 1 E-Book.
Personal life:
- Achieve balance in my life so that the “meh” stuff abates and serenity returns. This will likely necessitate a reorientation of a few things.
- (Speaking of which) Accept once and for all that I’m a writer and start steering my life toward making writing a more significant part of my life.
- Lose that damn 10 pounds I’ve been lugging since last year! 🙂
DMing and RPGs:
- Continue the short campaign model for D&D 4e and master the intricacies of the rules. Hit at least one story high-note per player to mark the experience in their minds.
- Finish Kobold Love and get it out there in conventions and on the net.
- Write at least 2 published products with credit, including a RPG product for children!
There you go. Lots on my plate (as always), yet I feel confident I can achieve them. Plus I have a ton of friends I’m sure are going to be willing to help me out.
What are your own goals for 2009?
Have the greatest of year!
Goals…. let me see…..
Actually get to the numbers most bloggers seem to think a new blog should be hitting. 100 UVs a day if I can swing it. Preferably 150, but may as well be realistic here.
Try to guest post in a couple places–just to see if I can.
Write a few short stories. Five over the course of the year that aren’t for a writing contest would be good.
Figure out what being the CEO of a game design company actually entails, and live up to the title. I think this is the big challenge of the lot, but they put me in the seat anyway, I may as well make it work.
Find work that’s going to sustain me while I’m getting the hang of the above.
Create a world. Maybe get a novel-length story out of it, but I’d settle for having a world for now.
Work on my drawing, to the point where I can do a passable human sketch without a reference.
Ravyns last blog post..Questions? Comments? Death threats?
Hey Ravyn! That’s a lofty set of goals and I’m sure you can achieve them.
In terms of being the CEO of a gaming company, you should ask around because many people on the RPGblogging circuit are either part time professional or have started their own companies.
The Wandering Men come to mind. Ask around!
Happy new year and thanks for being around.
As for a guest post, you are such a skilled writer I’m sure any blogger would take you with arms wide open. Myself included!
@CDM So that’s January sorted. What about the rest of the year? 😀
greywulfs last blog post..I am blogging in the future
Why… taking over the world of course… After that I won’t need any more objectives. 🙂
Good one man!
1. Write up Valiant
1a. Publish PDFs about Valiant to give away, then delete older background-only posts. This will require serious re-organization of the data involved.
1b.Learn how to make a decent looking PDF.
2.Write up the adventures as my 2 groups finish them but as Adventures, not as Game Logs. Only post Logs in outline/note form if at all.
2a. Take same adventures and create PDFs (see 1b above) and FGII files.
2b.Give away some of these. Sell some of them through DriveThruRPG or similar site.
3.Stop being so idiotically fascinated with site stats…. gods. I think I could refresh my counter page all day……
4.There is no 4. Everything else in life is normal right now.
Btw, I agree – Ravyn is an excellent read!
Viriathas last blog post..First Day of a New Year
@Virathia: Lofty goals!
Just so you know, it took me about 15 months to shake off my obsession with stats and I still look at them at least once a day!
🙂
Well… you know, it’s like losing 10 pounds… you know you /should/ but…
Well, here I go then!
Gaming/Net presence
1-Start my own blog and secretly plot a overhaul of Chatty (Wouldn’t be a good apprentice if I didn’t, right?)
2-Find myself a good game, settle down, and make a kick ass campaign that’d last a year. I’d be happy with a year.
3-Make that pilgrimage to Gen Con, also.
4-Get my roommate to discover something other than 3E
5-Figure out how the hell Alpha Omega should be runned… I’ve been trying to do that forever… It’s a weird system…
I could lose a few pounds too.
Good luck for some, good obsessing for others!
Happy new year! Good luck on all your goals!
As for me, 2009 will hopefully see me graduate from university and get a job with my degree where I don’t work have to work irregular shifts so I can get rhythm back in my life.
As for the gaming aspect; my new system, due in the summer, will be playtested by our group, and I hope to have a little more time on the side to play besides this; 20 sessions in two years is not enough…
Rallying an army to conquer Belgium and the Faroe Islands is due in summer 2010.
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year, ChattyDM!
My two biggest goals are to become a better blogger (in terms of posting regular quality posts that are on target for my blog) and getting my business off the ground.
As for an e-book, I am still interested in helping you out in any way possible! I’m excited to see what may come of it.
Some others in my list include learning to DM Dungeons and Dragons campaigns (right now I only have 2E, which I’m most familiar with), and get back into the habit of doing more creative writing.

Happy New Year Chatty. I’m still working on my 2009 RPG goals, but as always, they’ll include having more fun at every game.
HAPPY NEW YEAR Phil!!!!
