September 1, 2010 by The Chatty DM

One of the highlights of my visit at last weekend’s Toronto Fan Expo was the one hour panel I had the honour to share with RPG legends Ed Greenwood and Robin D. Laws. We ended up speaking to packed room of 100+ people. I was impressed!

Robin Laws Revisited: The Complete Series

July 23, 2009 by The Chatty DM

This post bring together all the articles I wrote about Robin Laws of Good Game Mastering from January 2008 to July 2009. For those  who haven’t heard or seen it, this book, published in 1999, gives advice on being a Game Master (irrespective of game systems).  The series was aimed at revisiting it in the […]

Robin Laws Revisited, Part 9: Conclusions (His and Mine)

July 22, 2009 by The Chatty DM

Back in January 2008, I purchased a PDF called Robin Laws’ of Good Game Mastering over at the Steve Jackson Games’ PDF store.  I had heard of that book from many GMs and I had seen it at my favorite game store. More importantly however, I had recently read (and been blown away by) his […]

Robin Laws’ Revisited, Part 8: Improvising

July 19, 2009 by The Chatty DM

After 5 days of starting a post and then trashing it, I decided to look at my unfinished projects to see what I could focus on to kill my latest white page syndrome.  When I picked up my very creased stapled copy of Robin Laws’ book, I noticed that it was opened at the last […]

Robin Laws’ Revisited: Part 7, Running your Game

March 18, 2009 by The Chatty DM

Way back when, I started a series of posts where I would review and comment on Robin D. Laws excellent GMing book called Robin’s Laws of Good Mastering. My main goal is to compare his thoughts on GM to mine and see how the 7 year old book stayed relevant today.  My objective isn’t to […]

This post is part of a series where I discuss Robin D Laws’ seminal work on GMing: Robin Laws’ of Good Game Mastering, written at the end of the 90’s . I compare it to my personal experience and opinions and I check how well the guide has ‘aged’. The other posts of this series […]

Robin’s Laws Revisited: Part 4, Creating your Campaign

March 28, 2008 by The Chatty DM

This post is part of a series that revisits Robin Laws’ classic work on Gamemastering, called simply enough Robin’s Laws of Good Game Mastering. I tackle each chapter in order. It’s not so much a review of the book but more my views on the subjects Robin touched then. If you want to get better […]

Robin’s Laws Revisited: Part 3, Picking up your set of rules

February 21, 2008 by The Chatty DM

This post is part of a series that explores Robin Laws’ seminal work on GMing, Robin’s Laws of Good Gamemastering and adds my thoughts on the same subject. This time, we tackle choosing a Rule set which is very actual since we’re at the butt end of D&D’s current edition. Part 1 can be found […]

Robin's Laws Revisited: Part 2, Player Types and Traits

January 23, 2008 by The Chatty DM

This post is part of a new series that explores Robin Laws’ seminal work on GMing. This time I tackle the book’s fundamental subject of player types and what they seek in RPGs. Part one can be found here. The second chapter of Robin’s Laws of Good Game Mastering brings up the subject that knowing […]
