Hollywood Halaster’s All-You-Can-Eat Buffet And Love Fortress

June 4, 2013 by Vanir

It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to play D&D (curse you, real life!), but I have managed to consume many fantastic high-budget entertainment products (featuring stunning pieces of intellectual property) in the meantime. As I write for a gaming blog, this usually leads me to considering the various ways I can (and sometimes do) cause […]

I Was A Teenage Movie Magic-User

September 20, 2011 by Vanir

The comments on my article on DM Fiat took an interesting turn last week when people started talking about how much more “cinematic” 4e is than previous editions. This is a claim I’d heard applied several times to 4e, but I’ve never really understood why. The combat is faster! All the classes have cool powers now, not just the casters! I can’t confirm or deny these things, but I am calling Shenanigans on them making anything more action-movie awesome on their own. As a matter of fact, I am extending these same Shenanigans to claims that any game system can do this.

Movies I Want to See in 2011

December 16, 2010 by Bartoneus

Something you may not know about me if you come to Critical Hits mainly for the RPG content is that I’m a huge movie nerd. In April of this year I posted a look ahead at the big summer movies of 2010 that I was hoping to see, just as I have done for the last four years running. This year is a bit different from the last few because I am already excited to see a ton of movies in 2011 and we’re not even through December yet! Here’s a look at the movies of early 2011 that I’m most excited to see, and a quick description of why I’m excited about it:

Movie Review: “Inception”

July 16, 2010 by Bartoneus

Inception is a wildly entertaining summer blockbuster wrapped in the packaging of a sleeper hit science fiction thriller/heist film. All of the comparisons of this movie to films such as The Matrix and Blade Runner are well deserved but fall short of the deeply involving experience that Inception provides the viewer. The film excels due to the stunning combination of well executed directing, inspired writing, spot on acting, and seamless production.

Inq. of the Week: Summer Movies ’10

April 6, 2010 by Bartoneus

As it is the first week of April, and luck has it that Dave is out of town and I am writing the Inquisition, I can happily continue my yearly trend of posting an inquisition around this time asking about everyone’s favorite summer movies!

My Love Affair With Tron

March 24, 2010 by Bartoneus

I grew up with the movie Tron. Okay, I’ll admit that I grew up with a lot of movies, but there is a shorter list of movies that I watched at least once a year for my entire life up to the age of 18. Tron is most certainly on that list, along with Aliens, […]

Comic Books, Franchises & Reboots Oh My!

January 13, 2010 by Bartoneus

Allow me to take you on a small adventure through my life of the last few months. With more spare time than I’ve had in the last six years and a cornucopia of neglected hobbies crying out for attention, trying to choose what to do next can be rather difficult.

Inq. of the Week: Video Formats?

November 16, 2009 by Bartoneus

We seem to be at an interesting crossroads when it comes to movies and video formats, with Blu-ray beating out HD DVD I assumed everything would transition over pretty quickly but it still seems that regular DVDs are the primary format for people watching movies at home.

Inq. of the Week: Non-RPG Content?

August 3, 2009 by Bartoneus

Well voting for the ENnies closed over the weekend, first and foremost I’d like to extend our thanks and appreciation to everyone who voted for us! No matter what you ranked our site compared to the others, they all help and hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised at the ceremony during GenCon.

Marvel’s X-Men Movie Mistakes

May 22, 2009 by Bartoneus

Stemming from some of the comments on Darth Cthulhu’s ‘controversial’ Star Trek post, I started thinking about the first X-Men movie and its relation to the rest of the franchise now that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is out.  One commentor related the first X-Men movie, Ironman, and the first Spiderman to Star Trek as examples that […]
