What if, Twitter Edition: Dailies as Encounter Powers

June 25, 2010 by The Chatty DM

One of the things I absolutely love about Twitter, once you reach a certain critical mass of followers, is its instant ability to create multiple parallel discussions about a subject.

Yesterday I was working at prepping my Font of Sorrows D&D 4e adventure when the following thought struck me:

What if dailies were encounter powers but could only be used while bloodied? That’s what I see in action movies like Iron Man 2

Early Friday Chat: Embarassing Campaigns, Geek Influences, and Kitchen-Sinking

May 6, 2010 by Dave

Maybe it’s because my early gaming experiences were at science fiction conventions (which definitely included plenty of outside influences) that I do like to weave in plenty of “winks” into my campaigns and lift liberally from pop culture. And yet, at the same time, I’m clearly embarassed by some of the elements that have made its way into my campaigns.

Friday Chat: Spousal Interuption

April 16, 2010 by The Chatty DM

So this morning I had a very inspiring email in my box: “You have mentioned you have a very loving and supportive wife. My question to you is how often does she interrupt your games and do you have a problem with the interruptions?”

Friday Chat: Don’t be boring! A Real D&D Insider Pitch

April 9, 2010 by The Chatty DM

levator Pitch: The PCs are on their way to meet the monarch of a peaceful land when they discover the half-buried body of a gigantic elemental noble where the king’s castle should be. As the colossal primordial pulls itself out of the ground and starts to walk away, the PCs realize that the castle is within the creature, and their only chance to recover it is to go inside its body. While inside, they must break several rituals that hold the castle in the creature’s chest before it can walk to a nearby ley-line and return to the Elemental Chaos.

Friday Chat: Bits from the Past

March 4, 2010 by The Chatty DM

The most important ingredient in any campaign is a skilled DM who has the time and the energy to carefully design and create his world, and the talent to communicate his setting effectively. The next most important ingredients are willing players who share common goals with the DM. Players interested in hack-and-slash adventures should not be matched a DM interested in careful plot structuring and detailed mystery solving.

Friday Chat: Are You Watching the Interweb?

February 18, 2010 by The Chatty DM

In the last few years, as I gravitated to jobs with extremely lenient web access policies (and absent monitoring) and started blogging, I found myself drawn just a bit too much. You know, the kind that makes you spend just a little too long catching up with the Questionable Content archives, or fall for link-baiting to a website that will ruin your life.

Friday Chat: Are You Trying Too Hard?

February 5, 2010 by The Chatty DM

Friday Chats are end-of-week posts intended to foster discussion on various RPG topics that bounce around in my noggin’. This week, with my post on prepping for my game, cramming it with all the awesome Magitek I can think of and applying lessons from last week’s posts, I caught myself asking, yet again, “Dude, aren’t you […]

Friday Chat: Zen and the Art of Dodging Dead Ends

January 8, 2010 by The Chatty DM

A few weeks before X-mas, I mentioned on that “When failure is not an option in a scene, don’t roll any dice”.  I think I coined the expression first when I Jedi Mind tricked my Mutant Future GM at a local con into saving me a roll that would likely derail the game if I […]

Friday Chat (Early edition): Are you a Backseat GM?

October 8, 2009 by The Chatty DM

I’m posting this early since I will have limited net access tomorrow. On Friday night, I get to lay aside my Dungeon Master’s Screen, maps, stack of books and other DM paraphernalia to grab a lone piece of paper, one rule book, a set of dice, a pencil and a mini.  I get to play […]

Friday Chat: Oh Wait!

October 2, 2009 by The Chatty DM

I can’t write a long post today (rejoice) because I’m about to start work.  However, I wanted to bring a hot 4e subject and wanted to launch a discussion about it over the weekend. My players are sick and tired of me harping on and on about the length of combat in 4e.  Apparently I’m […]
