Inq. of the Week: Tiers of Play?

September 9, 2009 by Bartoneus

Dave and I both started running 4th Edition D&D campaigns when the system was released, now over a year later Dave’s game is solidly into the paragon tier while mine looks to be entering paragon in the next few weeks.

Primal/Within Chronicles: City of the Overmind, Part 2

September 8, 2009 by The Chatty DM

See part 1 here. Burning Dungeon & Wheel Dragons As Wednesday night was ticking by, a dangerous new idea about the way to run a D&D adventure came up… You see, like many gamers unused to indie RPG designs, I read Mouse Guard with voracity but finished it with the  feeling that while I had […]

Following clues left behind by the monsters and the ever elusive ‘Master’, the party prepares to use thier recently acquired teleportation lore to follow […]

I Am A Liberal Gamer

August 28, 2009 by Dave

I’m a big proponent of change in game design. If something isn’t working, don’t just patch it, teardown and rebuild. This puts me in opposition to what I will respectfully call the “Conservative Gamer” contingent, who prefer that games preserve much of their makeup from edition to edition. But, that’s not for me. I prefer to see innovation in game design.

Friday Chat: The Issue(s) of Combat length in D&D 4e

August 28, 2009 by The Chatty DM

This post is inspired bu a Twitter discussions I had last week. As my player level up right into paragon level,  I noticed that the length of combat in D&D 4e kept increasing.  We often break the 90 minutes point  for ‘normal’ encounters and massive boss-level fights will easily eat up most of our 3 […]

GenCon 2009: High Level D&D Seminar

August 26, 2009 by Bartoneus

While at GenCon this year there were many events and seminars which I wanted to attend, but one of the seminars that I really didn’t want to miss was the High Level D&D one hosted by Bruce Cordell and Stephen Schubert from Wizards of the Coast.

Primal/Within Chronicles: Say it with Tentacles, Part 2

August 25, 2009 by The Chatty DM

See part 1 here. Setting up the Fight This is going to be a weird game report because the fight that I will get into shortly, is pretty much all that happened in the game, with some dream sequence before and a bit of story and scary stuff after.  So I’ll spend a few minutes […]

Primal/Within Chronicles: Say it with Tentacles, Part 1

August 23, 2009 by The Chatty DM

If you are entirely new to my game posts, hi!  Thanks for stopping by.  Have a look here to retrace what happened up to now. Scare us Ô Dungeonmaster It will have been our shortest Summer break ever. After having skipped one game while I was gone camping with my lovely wife and kids, I […]

Review: “Dragon Magazine Annual”

August 23, 2009 by Dave

When WotC announced that the venerable Dragon and Dungeon magazines were becoming digital-only offerings, the reaction was controversial. The magazines are only available in PDF, and to subscribers of the D&D Insider service. There is still no way to get the magazines without a subscription to the whole package of DDI. Not too long after the details shook out it was revealed that some of the content would be reprinted in Annuals. Dragon Magazine Annual is the first of these collections.

GenCon 2009: 4e Extravaganza (with Photos)

August 17, 2009 by Dave

On Friday at GenCon, we attended the 4e Extravaganza, which was where the new setting was announced (which I’m sure everyone has heard by now is Dark Sun). However, there were a number of other products showcased, some new, some already known, and a few big surprises.
