This week sees me once again off to the Origins Game Fair, one of the big shows of the summer for us nerdily inclined. Origins still remains the smaller, slower show for me- while there are some board game releases occasionally and some interesting small press stuff, all the major releases and announcements tend to wait for one of the later shows, especially GenCon. However, there’s still fun times to be had.
Fear and Loathing in the Forgotten Realms
Fear effects have always been tricky to roleplay, especially with players who maintain that their PC is not afraid of anything. Read on to find out how I’ve tricked my own issues with anxiety into teaching me about how to roleplay when my character is scared out of his mind.
The Keys to Con Games
I’m picky. Nay, I’m downright spoiled about my convention time. I’ve been going to conventions since before I was born and going to gaming rooms since I knew enough to not eat the dice (you roll them first, then eat them.) I’ve seen it all, and I’m much more militant about not spending precious time and money at a convention on a game I’m not going to enjoy. So how do I try to mitigate this and only play in the awesome? I narrow my convention game search to the following categories.
Cleanings of Spring Dawning
This past week, my wife and I have been going through the house getting rid of old stuff. She enjoys freeing up space and seeing the house clean. I enjoy looking at my old stuff, reliving all the good times we had together, and almost weeping when I throw any of it away. And that’s not even talking about my boxes of AD&D 1E books from high school. SAVE VS PETRIFICATION.
Rise of the Eldrazi Preview
The newest expansion set for Magic: The Gathering is going to be released in a few days and for those of you who play the game I wanted to share some of the information and spoiler cards that WotC has released. The set is called Rise of the Eldrazi, and is the third set of the Zendikar block and looks like it comes with some new rules and mechanics that set it apart from everything else that’s out there right now.
PLAY D&D NOW, MY LORD
One of the hottest new games out on the web today is Evony. I need not go into how it is amazing. It pretty much speaks volumes about itself. Truthfully, I’m not really sure why anyone would play anything but Evony. Just in case you have not ascended to the next level of gaming, I bring to you several ways you can bring a little of the light and goodness that is Evony to your D&D game until you decide to catch up with the rest of humanity.
Cheeseburger, Plain
Back in my day, you had to turn in government stamps just to play a game of pong! We used to have to steal ram chips just to remember where we lived! My daddy worked on the parallel port, and worked 256 shifts manufacturing computer metaphors! And all you damn kids want is more explosions. I’ll have none of it!
The Soft Landing: Pax East Highlights
Late night board gaming, meeting Wil Wheaton, running the DM challenge, and much more in the Chatty DM’s trip to Pax East.
Oh, and Silver Bulettes that crap gravitational anomalies.
Review: SmallWorld
