Alternative titles for last week’s poll: “Blood, Sweat, and Tiers”, “Tiers of a Clown”, and “Tiers for Fiers.” 91% of you have played lowish level D&D recently, 27% in the mid to high range, and only 3% dare to go EPIC. Some interesting stories in the comments too! Whatever levels you’re playing (or not playing […]
Review: Lord of the Rings Risk – Trilogy Edition
Overview Lord of the Rings Risk: Trilogy Edition, a board game by Hasbro and Parker Brothers released in 2003, takes the classic game of Risk and transports it into Tolkien’s Middle Earth. In addition to the change of theme, the game builds on the classic Risk mold by adding several new elements – presenting new […]
Preview: Magic the Gathering – Planechase
While at GenCon this year I got to sit down and play a preview game of the new Magic the Gathering variation called Planechase that Wizards of the Coast is releasing September 4th. Like MtG except there is always one plane in play that drastically changes one or more aspects of the game.
YouTube Tuesday: Well, OK, I Was The Traitor Edition
An ad for the newest Looney Labs party game, “Are You The Traitor?” Not only has it quickly become one of my favorite games (right up there with Werewolf), I worked on it and I appear in this video. Marvel at my acting prowess of delivering two whole lines, thrill at my crazy eyes, and […]
I Am A Liberal Gamer
I’m a big proponent of change in game design. If something isn’t working, don’t just patch it, teardown and rebuild. This puts me in opposition to what I will respectfully call the “Conservative Gamer” contingent, who prefer that games preserve much of their makeup from edition to edition. But, that’s not for me. I prefer to see innovation in game design.
Inq. of the Week: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
I am going to subject you all to another question about what you’d like to see here, but focused on our immediate future. These answers will help us to determine where we should spend our time and energy at GenCon. While we already have a packed schedule (much of which I will lay out below), the effort we spend on write-ups of particular subjects will depend on what you, the audience want to see.
Origins 2009: Exhibit Hall in Words, Pictures, and Sounds
One of the biggest draws of any big game convention is the exhibit hall, and Origins is no exception. This year saw a return to using the entirety of the exhibit hall for booths. There’s always plenty for gamers to spend their hard earned cash on, and this year saw a number of new releases, as well as some hidden gems recommended to me by other show-goers that may have been around previously.
Origins Awards 2009
I reported live from the 35th Annual Origins Awards via the Critical Hits twitter feed, but here’s the results, with all the nominees and winners:
Being a Good New Player
So often the focus of my articles is DMing. However, in a few short weeks I will be doing something unusual: joining The Game’s regular D&D game. I’m going to run through the considerations of making a character for a game that has been run for a considerable time (the party is starting off paragon level).
Origins Awards Nominees 2009: Picks and Commentary
icv2 has published the list of Origins Awards nominees. The nominees are decided by retailers at the GAMA Trade Show, and then attendees of Origins vote on the winners, and are announced at a ceremony on site (which we’ve covered two years in a row now). Here’s the relevant categories to the Critical Hits audience, along with my favorite from each category, and my guess of what will win.
