Our newest feature is up, and it’s a bit different than the previous ones. It’s a Guide to Gaming DVDs, showcasing both those that star gamers as central characters and ones that are officially Dungeons & Dragons (as much as we might try to disown them). It’s an update of my gift guide from years ago, updated both with new information and to trim out some of the DVDs that didn’t quite fit as well (but might make it into a future feature).
Review: “Fanboys”
It has taken a journey worthy of the Hero Cycle: the movie Fanboys, written over a decade ago before Phantom Menace came out, has struggled against setbacks and massive executive meddling, has finally been released. It was many years in development and suffered delays (I first heard about it two years ago, when it was set to be released in the summer of ’07), so the question is, has it all been worth it?
The answer, as Master Yoda would say it, is a solid “Yes, hrrrrrmmmm.”
Comic to Movie: Lost in Adaptation
Not long ago I was quite excited to see the movie adapted from the very good comic book, Wanted. This excitement was spurned by a few non comic readers saying that the movie was great, and so I figured if they thought the movie was awesome then surely it must be a decent movie no […]
YouTube Tuesday: City 17 Edition
Since I was sent it no less than 3 times this week, here’s the Half-Life 2 fan movie that everyone’s talking about. It’s well done, but perhaps more importantly, it shows that good quality stuff can now be made for as cheap as $500.
YouTube Tuesday: The Shadow of Dr. Manhattan Edition
One of many “viral” pieces created for the upcoming Watchmen movie. Even if I’m not 100% the film will be all that great, I gotta say they’re going all out to incorporate everything they can from the book and make it feel real.
YouTube Tuesday: Epic Speech Overload Edition
If you’re not inspired by some part of this, there’s just no getting through to you. Extra points given for using one of my all-time favorite geek epic speeches that is underquoted: Picard’s “The line must be drawn here!” speech from First Contact.
Critical Hits Gift Guide 2008
This year’s gift guide goes out to all of you last minute shoppers who need to pick up some games and gifts for all the nerds in your life. Many of our suggestions are products we’ve reviewed, so I will link to the review where appropriate.
Ultimate D&D Universe
In a way, the transition from the previous editions core setting to 4e’s core setting was an attempt not unlike the attempts by DC and Marvel Comics to clean up their continuity so as to allow new readers (players) an easier entry point and to recreate the continuity to fit together better. DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths was the trend-setter there, but the analogue that works better for me is Marvel’s Ultimate line.
YouTube Tuesday: AHA! Edition
Darth Vader gets some creative dialogue, taken from elsewhere.
YouTube Tuesday: Akira Remake Edition
A satirical take on a remade version of the classic movie Akira. With Day the Earth Stood Still starring Keanu Reeves coming out, no crazy remake concept would surprise me nowadays.
