Inq. of the Week: Arcane Powered

April 21, 2009 by Dave

While thinking about spell-casting, I got to thinking about spells themselves. I flipped through both the 3rd edition spell list and cross checked a few against the 4e list (there’s some that didn’t make the jump) and compiled what I feel is a pretty good set of classic arcane spells. Especially around the lower levels there are more that saw more play just because of the nature of lower-level spells, but I think this is a pretty good list across all levels.

My 2009 Gathering of Friends Picks

April 16, 2009 by Dave

I’m back from the 2009 Gathering of Friends, the 10 day long boardgaming con. I’m also (mostly) recovered. This year, I focused more on relaxing, hanging out with fellow designers, and playing prototypes moreso than playing every new board game that came out. (Also, I made the final table of both the Loopin’ Louie and […]

Announcing the One Page Dungeon Contest

April 14, 2009 by Dave

You could win tons of dungeon-related prizes just by coming up with a one page dungeon. Interested? I’ve attached the press release by the contest organizers with all the details. I should also mention that I’m one of the judges, helping to represent the “new school” side of things. So start buttering me up now […]

RIP Dave Arneson

April 9, 2009 by Dave

Dave Arneson, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, passed away on April 7th at the age of 61.

While Gygax was eventually given much of the credit for the initial creation of D&D, Arneson’s camapign setting Blackmoor would shape the paradigm of D&D worlds, forming the basis of the D&D campaign settings, which have incalculable influence on video game worlds and fantasy novels.

PDFs Want To Be Free

April 7, 2009 by Dave

While I’m a big proponent of open source and creative commons, I’ve understood past efforts to protect intellectual property. Shutting down the power card sites was unfortunate to those of us who found them to be a big aid at the table, but there were many good reasons not to open the door to all sorts of legal challenges later. But shutting down PDF sales with almost no notice and taking them inhouse? It just doesn’t seem to add up. Especially since there’s no alternative in place to buy them.
