OK, taking on Star Wars: Episode 1 is like killing trade droids with a lightsaber: no challenge at all. What is a challenge is doing a 70 minute complete deconstruction of the movie, completely eviscerating it from both a critical and emotional standpoint, and making it completely hilarious in the process. Plus, there’s random digressions, a completely bizarre narrator, and a startling basement scene that you won’t see in an Ebert review. Well worth watching: the first part embedded here, the other 6 parts linked after the jump.
Critical Hits Gift Guide 2009
It’s the Monday before Xmas, and you’re still looking for a gift for the gamer in your life. Or you’ve got some Xmas money coming that you want to spend. Either way, here are some games (and a book) that we recommend you buy.
First Impressions: “Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space” RPG
Cubicle 7 has created a version clearly aimed at a broader audience than those who would normally play an RPG. First, it’s a boxed set, containing everything you need to get playing. Second, everything is separated by role: there’s a player’s guide and a gamemaster’s guide, and there’s nothing needed that requires you to read the other role’s book. Finally, the text tries to be a helpful to new players as possible.
You’re a Mean One, Mr. Gish
I have posted my entry into the Winter Holiday Encounter Contest, an adventure for 5 15th level PCs that takes them up the slopes of Mt. Crunchit to face a certain green-skinned thief and his trusted companion with a fake horn.
YouTube Tuesday: Rule the Sky Edition
Animated trailer for EN Publishing’s War of the Burning Sky adventure path, spanning all levels, available for both 3.5e and 4e D&D. Pretty cool teaser, and besides, how often do you get to see a trailer for D&D adventures?
Inq. of the Week: Seasons Greetings
I’ve run a few adventures in wintery climes (they go hand in hand with frost giants, after all) and it does add an extra flavor above and beyond the normal temperate adventures. That’s my way of using gaming to introduce this real world question…
YouTube Tuesday: I Know Block-Fu Edition
A pivotal scene in the Matrix, recreated in stop-motion with Legos.
Let Me Tell You About My Campaign: Might Of The Inquisition
In general, though, writing about my specific campaign tends to fall close enough to “let me tell you about my character” that I tend to let it go. However, I realize that there’s some value for me talking about my campaign, especially given my current setup. I won’t go adventure by adventure. I will, however, hit some of the important points of running the game in the hopes that it will help some of you run your own games.
YouTube Tuesday: Dago-Booyah Edition
Extreme tourism enthusiasts should go to the Dagobah system.
3 Rolls, 1 Check
This happens for many kind of skill rolls. An idea occurs to one player, who rolls a skill, which then prompts several other players to also roll. If a check is declared, then everybody rolls who can roll. You can’t blame the players: after all, rolling dice is fun.
