Critical Hits Podcast #23: Tomb of Horrors Actual Play (Part 2)

September 14, 2010 by Dave

Running the 4e conversion of the Tomb of Horrors (from the DM Rewards program) continues. In part 1, the party ventured into the Tomb and explored the first hallway, encountering pit traps and riddles. At the end of the hallway, they ignore a certain green devil face (with a darkened mouth) to all leap into a portal. We pick up right there afterward.

Critical Hits Podcast #22: Tomb of Horrors Actual Play (Part 1)

September 7, 2010 by Dave

As part of my ongoing campaign, I was able to inflict, I mean, run the 4e conversion of the Tomb of Horrors (from the DM Rewards program) for my regular group as part of a flashback to a previous group of heroes. The further they got in the adventure, the more information revealed for when their regular characters would tackle the older version of the classic dungeon.

Dave’s Gen Con 2010 Wrap-up

August 14, 2010 by Dave

So you may have seen all the Gen Con schedules posted last week that told you where various Critical Hits staff members were going to be, I am going to buck the trend and tell you where I WAS at Gen Con… or at least the highlights.

Gen Con 2010: Drinking Dungeons & Dragons

August 11, 2010 by Dave

Now years ago, it started as a joke: making a drinking game out of 4e Dungeons & Dragons. After that, it became an annual tradition at Gen Con for some of our closest blogger friends those first two years, run by ChattyDM. I offered to step in and spear-head the DD&D game, if he would collaborate with me and run a second table. An accord was struck and the planning began: a Drinking Dungeons & Dragons event for Gen Con to top all the previous.

Critical Hits Podcast #21: Red Box Actual Play with Jeremy Crawford

August 11, 2010 by Dave

One part interview, one part actual play, all recorded in the noisy Sagamore ballroom, Jeremy Crawford of Wizards of the Coast ran a short game for a group of the Critical-Hits crew showing off characters made using the new D&D Essentials Red Box. What role is the new Fighter Slayer build? What does halfling blood taste like? Are Wookies really the new PC race? Answers to these questions and much more await within.

Critical Hits Podcast #20: Interview with Rich Baker and Mike Mearls

August 10, 2010 by Dave

The Friday of Gen Con 2010, Bartoneus and myself sat down with Rich Baker and Mike Mearls of Wizards of the Coast (in the gaming penthouse above their booth) to talk about Dark Sun, Essentials, and beyond. Some of our questions were a bit invalidated by the seminar the next day, but it’s all included for the sake of posterity.

Gen Con 2010: D&D New Products Seminar

August 7, 2010 by Dave

Gen Con is one of two places to get all the big news in D&D for the next year (their own D&D XP convention being the other.) Like last year, we live-tweeted the announcements as they came in, but here’s a basic write-up of the seminar all in one place. We’ll also have photos of the different products later when we have access to a better internet connection.

Gen Con 2010: Castle Ravenloft Board Game Unboxing Video

August 7, 2010 by Dave

On Wednesday, Day 0 of Gen Con, Trevor Kidd (community manager for Wizards of the Coast) gave us an opportunity to play in the Castle Ravenloft cooperative board game being released in the next few weeks. Trevor asked Bartoneus and I to help him do an unboxing video of all the components, so we’re posting the video (in two parts) below. Enjoy and let us know if you have any questions about it.

Inquisition of the Week: Best Game Nominees

July 19, 2010 by Dave

This week, as we’ve been beating the drums, Ennies voting is going on now (obligatory plug- category #18, vote us #1 in Best Blog!) Of course, the big category, of which there are 10 nominees, is Product of the Year. These games exemplify excellence in everything from writing, design, and presentation. Though all the nominees are worth notice, it is these that have some of the highest honors in the industry.
