Retro Critical Hits

November 9, 2009 by Bartoneus

Greetings everyone, Danny (aka Bartoneus) here!ย  You may have noticed that late last week and over the weekend Critical Hits was in “Retro” mode and now that our layout is back a lot of things are still messed up. A lot of the problems stem from a completely honest and understandable accident, but the end result is hopefully a better framework for the site. Unfortunately the last full backup we had was in May of this year, so we’ll be working through today and tomorrow to get all of the missing images back up and hopefully have everything back to normal soon!

It was actually pretty funny to see the site in the default wordpress theme again, which is the same layout we had back in the Fall of 2005 when we started the site (but with spiffy and cool changing banners). After the next few days if you happen to notice something that’s still broken or missing let us know! Please bear with us as we sort these things out, and everything should be back to normal and better than ever by the end of the week!

The incident really stemmed from a malicious act of hacking that you think would be a bigger deal to our hosting company, but I’m finding more and more that hosting companies aren’t necessarily there to help your site be secure and safe, even if it can potentially affect other sites on the same server.

We’ll probably be missing a lot of images from this year for a while, but at least we’re back up and running. Many thanks as always to our Resident Savior Graham for working late into the night on multiple occasions to get us to some semblance of working.

Good thing I had a backup laying around ๐Ÿ™‚

Perhaps your host should look into solutions to run each Web site in a “chroot jail” – something that would prevent scripts from one user to interact with scripts in other accounts.

It presents its own challenges but seems completely doable. A quick Google search shows some hosts offer it.

That or you guys just go and get your own virtual server ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, many thanks to you as well, Eric… I was beginning to dread not having any of our images anymore.

Well.. you could still try try to run a spider through webarchive.org to try and find the other missing pictures (!)
