#AboutmyPC: Contest Results

September 16, 2009 by The Chatty DM

One month ago, I launched a contest over Twitter called #aboutmyPC where I invited people to submit a description of their character in 130 characters or less (the #aboutmyPC tag taking 10 characters). Over 350 entries were sent for that contest so it was a huge success.

My criteria for the contest were pretty simple. The description had to grab my attention and elicit a reaction from me.

Of course, Wizards of the Coast setting up 2 PCs to actually enter the contest at the Gen Con booth was icing on the cake!

Well today, a bit tardy I might say, I give you the results in each of the five categories of the contest.

Best Haiku!

  • Nick O’Leary: #aboutmypc
    /Name is Doc Lightning./
    /Pulp scientist and hero:/
    /wielding super speed/

(Well, it was the only one… but it’s good!)

Funniest PC

Runner Ups

  • srhnerv: Kyle Blackthorne, the kind, gentle Dread Necromancer with a heart of gold and an artist’s touch. #AboutmyPC
  • Serok42: Malak Gondson: Human Artificer/Cleric of Gond. Red wizard of Thay. A creepy guy w a metal hand. His only friend? A severed hand. #AboutMyPC
  • magependragon: Tavia Glitterale “charismatic” halfling rogue travels in a favoured Genasi Swordmage’s backpack. Why can’t we teleport together? #aboutmyPC
  • jhtatroe: #aboutmyPC Turns out, even if you’re the Lyrandar heir, marrying a weretiger is bad for your life expectancy. And your wardrobe.
  • TheFlameBeneath: Cleric of Shaundakul, walks in the air and moves very fast, the perfect ambulance! #aboutmyPC

Winner

  • drumsrgr8forn8: #aboutmyPC Fidget is a warforged mage with a twitch. Every time he sees a pretty girl he lets loose a magic missile. Will he ever find love?

Most Evocative PC

Runner Ups

  • I’m just awmyhr: A street orphan, Alar was adopted & trained by the last of the Bright Wind Monks. He seeks the ruined temple to restore the Order #aboutmyPC
  • newbiedm: #aboutmypc Barundar is a dwarf with a heart of gold who moonlights as a comedian at “The Bloody Rabbit” on his days off from hunting giants.
  • WyattSalazar: Karin Apuleius just wanted to write an encyclopedia and gain clout as a writer…but then saving the world got in the way.
  • hamsaplenty: Léopold Gèrar, of Luruar, is a naïve kid with a desire to sing and dance like his Harper ancestors. One problem: he’s tonedeaf. #aboutmypc

Winner

  • RJazo: Almirith, Lord-in-Exile of the Willow Court. Scion of an Eladrin noble and elven huntswoman. A half-blood on the throne? Never! #aboutmyPC

Worst Pun

Runner Ups

  • cristinaraphael: Neovix is a halfling rogue arranged to be married to Putridio. She heard about a cleric’s power of Beguiling Tongue, and fled. #aboutmypc
  • Aremedis: Atlacatl, Olman Priest of Quetzalcoatl, Not afraid of doing what needs to be done. “The Children are our future… sacrifices” #aboutmyPC

Winner

  • geeksdreamgirl: #aboutmyPC Lily Morningwood, shifter druid wore a pink feather boa, doused herself with displacer beast pheromones + let nature work it out.

Best PC

Runner Ups:

  • WyattSalazar: Coriander Delight is a Star Pact Warlock who wants to help everyone be healthy and happy before the Old Ones devour the world. #aboutmypc
  • orcasquall: Kepler, halfling wild magic sorcerer, banned from birthday parties for setting cakes (and hair) on fire. Accidentally. #aboutmypc
  • awmyhr: A street orphan, Alar was adopted & trained by the last of the Bright Wind Monks. He seeks the ruined temple to restore the Order #aboutmyPC
  • Gary.S.Watkins: #aboutmypc: Grunk – Half-ogre fighter, gentle giant, fierce in battle, carves tiny sculptures from enemies’ bones and gives to children.

Winner

  • wkinchlea: Bean is a teenaged shadar-kai psion prophecied to be a great reaper of souls for the Raven Queen, but would rather just bake. #aboutmypc

There you have it… The best entries (as judged by little old me) out of the 350 hundred or so.

Each winner will be contacted and some cool prizes will be distributed.

Here are a few noteworthy entries that couldn’t be qualified because they were from Wizards people or from my friends playing in a game I DMed at Gen Con.

  • bartoneus: Gnarls “J’Booty” Jones is a dragonborn surfer ‘Boardmage’ who loves getting kruthiks high & riding zombonis #aboutmyPC
  • Davethegame: Fatbot is an always-hungry Warforged who eats anything in sight when he gets nervous but harbors a terrible inner secret. #aboutmyPC
  • geeksdreamgirl: #aboutmypc last night at drunk #dnd, Honey the psionic band slut got it on with a beholder. So… many… tentacles! Ooohhh.
  • aquelajames: Saman Bharat is a noble from Ket with a history of military disasters. Maybe he should have studied magic harder. #aboutmypc
  • betterwithmayo: Mr.Furrato is a dragonborn paladin in a rakshasa outfit who stars in “Domo Arigato, Mr. Furrato”, an animal-themed burlesque show #AboutMyPC

There you go!  Another contest done!  I should get ready for the next one.

I’d like to thank Katie (betterwithmayo) for having helped me set this contest up (and for making the cool #AboutmyPC cards for the WotC booth!).

Drat, didn’t even win runner up in funniest or worst pun. Well, I guess I won’t quit my day job and turn over that comedy leaf I’ve been looking into… Did it crack you up at all?

Holy cow! Almirith won most Evocative PC! And to think that I don’t even have a speech prepared!

Well, if anyone is interested, a more thorough writeup of his background can be found here

Woot, two runners up! Coriander was extremely fun to play. Acting both cute and insane is something I have down to an art after so much anime.

Wow, Best PC. I’m surprised and honoured. Great contest too. I’m still reading #aboutmypc hashtags, saved on my twitter feed right beside #competitivegeekbaiting.

@Storyteller: Aww man, don’t take it hard, there were more than 350 entries, that’s a lot! And Comedy is exceedingly fickle… no two people find the same things funny. I’m glad you participated! There will be other contests like this.

@Rob: The best wins are the unexpected ones. Conngrats Rob, that was one tough category to judge!

@Wyatt: I really like that happy go lucky until the Old Ones come back concept, and you made it fit in 130 characters! Great work!

@WillK: Your’s was a great use of the Switch at the end that totally surprised and delighted me. It elicited the strongest response on my Gygaxian entertain-me meter.

My cleric of Shaundakul as a runner-up? That’s cool! And I thought my dwarf pirate was funnier.. XD

Once again the bridesmaid, never the bride. Oh well, I certainly enjoyed the contest. Thank you, Chatty. It’s great fun to exercise my creative muscles once in a while and your contests provide a nice, compact way of doing it. Keep ’em coming. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
