As many of you know, today marks the first day that you can vote at the Ennies.
As some of you many also know, I entered Musings of the Chatty DM for the second time this year and I didn’t get nominated. In fact, last year, I entered the contest as a dare with a friend of mine and he’s the one who ended up winning for best Website.
The thing is, I’m not bitter at all. I’m actually getting quite a kick out of being an indicator of who will win the best website category. So far I’m shooting for 100% 🙂
This year the competition will be very fierce, the hodge podge category of “Best Website” contains some very high caliber nominees:
First up, I must say that all these websites are amazing. Top notch and high quality. That three of my favorite game designers (Cook, Baur and Chalker) made it to this list is simply fantastic.
However, I would have preferred that there be a ‘best RPG blog’ category as I believe that there are enough great RPG blogs out there to make a good category. In fact I find it incredible that Martin Ralya’s Gnome Stew didn’t get a nomination. Martin, I say we make our own Blogging awards next year!
While all those entries are awesome, I have to pick one to vote for. That’s why I chose to give my whole support to Dave and Danny’s Critical Hits blog. They’ve managed to produced high quality content on a consistent basis, they’ve achieved an excellent reputation as gaming journalist and the manage to entertain me with their witty geek humour and excellent selection of Tuesday Videos. Of particular interest to me is their collection of D&D 4e resources that they’ve gathered from all over the web and organized in easy to use format.
Critical Hits is one of the first gaming blogs I’ve discovered over 2 years ago and Dave and Danny were among the first guys who reached out to me and helped me find my voice as a blogger and writer. I’m proud to consider both of them as close friends and collaborators.
I wish all nominees the best of luck but I hope my friends get to take home the prize.

Maybe break it down into something like best RPG advice site and best RPG utility site. It seems strange to have something like Obsidian Portal competing with Critical Hits. They provide two very different services.
It’s a tough competition but Critical Hits is a good call!

I agree with you completely. It really complicates matters to put Dungeon a Day (one of the first subscription Based Adventures apart from Dungeon Mag), Obsidian portal, a publishing legend’s blog and 2 fan-blogs in the same category.

I can’t say for certain because I wasn’t a judge this year, but I don’t know that enough blogs were entered to warrant their own category. As such, they have to be lumped in with their parent category.

First, thanks Phil for the endorsement! (Your $1500 check is in the mail… a shame it’s American moneys instead of Canadian)

Evidently a Best Blog category was very close to happening but was killed in the 11th hour. Hopefully next year, since I agree that both Chatty and Gnome Stew deserved to be there.

Thanks for the kind words about the Stew, Chatty! I was surprised not to see your name on the list this year, and I hope you’ll join us in submitting again next year.
The Best Website category is indeed an odd duck this year. I’ve got an article going up with a couple of suggestions (spoiler: none for Best Website, though — it’s too damned hard to choose!), and my own analogy for why the duck is so odd. 😉

@Martin: I think I’ll also try to get one of the products I’ll have written for nominated next year. 🙂
