Our newest feature is up, and it’s a bit different than the previous ones. It’s a Guide to Gaming DVDs, showcasing both those that star gamers as central characters and ones that are officially Dungeons & Dragons (as much as we might try to disown them). It’s an update of my gift guide from years ago, updated both with new information and to trim out some of the DVDs that didn’t quite fit as well (but might make it into a future feature).
As always, feel free to leave feedback or updates here in the comments or by emailing me in the link in my profile below.

Wow, someone else besides me remembers the D&D cartoon from the early 80’s. Though I prefered Thundarr the Barbarian.
Some of those might actually get a complete family review by me and my kids.

LOL, pretty much all of them are “not recommended”!

I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve seen almost all of the movies on your list. I can’t think of anything obvious that’s missing. If you expanded your criteria to include “Video Gamers” then you’d have to include The Wizard (1989). It’s a B-movie at best and would fit nicely with many of the other films already on the list.

I thought you meant gaming DVDs as in Scourge of Worlds. I still cannot believe that I paid for that, let alone £30…

Ameron: The Wizard is a classic… I remember seeing it in theaters, then being totally blown away to find Super Mario 3 in the arcade in the mall before the game was released. Possibly the first game I insisted on getting (though in this case, having my parents buy it for me) the day it came out.
Prince of Cats: Scourge of Worlds is on the list, but yeah, I see what you’re saying.

I think the problem was that I tried playing / watching it on Friday and the graphical style does not compare favourably to modern CG quality. I just reminded myself that I could have paid £30 for the D&D film of a few years back.
I have the cartoon series on DVD. It was as good as I remembered. I can live with all of the other D&D disappointments knowing that the cartoon is cheesy, but still fun…

Record of Lodoss War. Check Wikipedia to find out more. It’s the best D&D adaptation that almost no-one realizes is a D&D adaptation.

…Holy hell, you’re serious! That’s awesome!
Reminds me of the Dragonlance novels, actually.

@Japolo: Crap, good call! I’d completely forgotten about Lodoss War! That series has one of my favorite representations of a Barbarian/Berserker in it, and at least two of my characters have been influenced by it.
