Tonight at 10 EST, the last half of the last season of the remake of Battlestar Galactica premieres (or more simply, Season 4.5… since we all know that calling things “.5” is an awesome idea). For those of you not caught up, I recommend avoiding this post since it contains some SPOILERS, and will probably contain more in the comments.
I know I and many others have lost a good deal of our gusto for the series after experiencing some pretty weak episodes in season 3, coupled with admissions by the head writers that they never had a real plan about whom the final Cylons would be. (Then Ron Moore parodied himself, which helped a tiny bit). But at this point, even if I were disgusted with the series (which I’m not, thanks to a few solid season 4 episodes), I’m far too pot committed not to see this through. At this point, with only a handful of episodes to go, I’m hoping that the remainder of the episodes are focused on both answering questions and providing an epic finale. I’m fine with there being some open-endedness of the ending (sometimes to extremes), but not tying up many of the loose ends created by rampant prophecy at this point would just be sloppy and unsatisfying. (And I don’t want to depend on Wild Mass Guessing). I already have the feeling there’s a limit to what we’ll see in the Cylon’s origins- after all, there’s still a prequel coming. However, there are some big, big questions that really need to be answered, beyond the obvious “who’s the final cylon?” that seems to be the linchpin of their marketing campaign.
Anyway, with another big twist launching us into these final episodes, it’s very important that stuff gets done. No more boxing episodes, no more abortion episodes… send us hurtling towards a finish. Of course, by the end, we’ll definitely know the most important question of them all: who will the Hodg-man play, and is it too obvious to say that he’s a PC?
Catch you here in the comments after the episode airs… assuming it answers or raises questions.
The Game says
Nobody’s going to believe me since the only person I told I’m no longer on speaking terms with, but I totally called who the last Cylon was. (Of course, that could still be something of a mislead).
Overall, a pretty intense episode, though the bigger twist came earlier in the episode I thought.
And because I’m so damn clever, I’ll repeat what I said during the episode: “We knew there would be too many Starbucks on Earth.”

The Final Reveal made total sense, and was a theory I had toyed with, but ultimately discounted because of its “meh, so what” impact.
Meh, so what?
On the other hand, what the final cylon said was much more interesting.

I’m not sure we’re done with the big reveal. I think that it’s more complex. Because, as much as I love and am glad there is a brief moment of happiness for them, I don’t think the writers would give us a “So what” moment.
I could be wrong.
Still, awesome awesome show.

Bartoneus says
It’s interesting for me because I watched all of Seasons 1,2,3, and 4.0 on DVD without seeing them on the air, so the worse episodes don’t stand out as much because they are taken as a part of 2-3 episodes at a time and the sub-plots and minor points come together much better.
Really enjoyed the first episode of 4.5, though it doesn’t exactly look to be shaping up for a feel good season, I’m still hopeful the end will be satisfying.
The Main Event says
I think that recently Adama’s character has jumped off the rails a bit, especially with that shit he pulled towards the end of the episode with the whoe “Sit down, Cylon”… routine.
Bartoneus says
Main Event: I’d say there’s a difference between a character going off the rails and events so out of the character’s mental grasp that they force them to an extreme like that (ie – off the rails). I agree to an extent that at certain points while watching the end of 4.0 and this first episode of 4.5 that I thought he had gone a bit too far off the deep end, but he’s come back to his senses and so I think his bout of insanity is pretty understandable.
Also, good job Dave with sucking me back into TV tropes when you posted this and no doubt it’ll happen again today. 🙂
