Inq. of the Week: Day Jobs?

December 15, 2008 by Bartoneus

the-office-michael-scottWell it looks like Dave’s question from last week was a hit, when he asked what campaign settings we’ve played in we recieved 577 votes and it should be no surprise that Forgotten Realms came out in the lead with 19% of them.  Ravenloft sits in second with 13%, followed very closely by Dark Sun and Greyhawk each with 12%, then Dragonlance at 11% and then in fifth place comes Planescape with 10% which three weeks ago we found out is the most desired setting to be brought into 4E by our readers.  Eberron and Spelljammer filled out the rest of the most popular settings, standing above the rest of the options each of which got at least a few votes for people who’d played them.

A lot of the Inquisitions that I write are about you guys, the readers, because I’ve always been curious to find out a little more about who you are and what has brought you to our site.  One thing that we’ve never quite touched on is the topic of what all of us do when we’re not busy gaming, or talking about gaming, or blogging about gaming.  I’d say that it’s a safe assumption the vast majority of us still have day jobs, or at the very least are students working through school while we enjoy our wonderful hobbies whenever we can.

Thus, for this week’s Inquisition we’d like to know what field or professions you work in, you can select multiple choices because we’re sure there are some of you who have more than one job, or who’s job crosses between multiple fields.  As always there is an Other option, and we’d love for everyone to share exactly what you do in the comments!

I am primarily a .NET developer but cross over into the domain of the Arts as I often do corporate graphics for the websites. I also count myself as a student since I am enrolling to pursue my Master’s.

How would I list being an Engineer?

    Science Construction?

Graham: I would start by selecting the Design one, where it says Engineer. 😛

  7. Graham says

    December 15, 2008 at 2:19 pm

    Guh.

Didn’t think to look under design, since that’s only one side of engineering.

    I still like Science Construction.

I am a Games Designer (like Alex above, computer-games and not tabletop), but I do sometimes wonder about switching… Not the only D&D player in the company, but the only one who never worked for Black Isle…

Also, it turns out that D&D is tax-deductible. (well… the DM’s guide counts as a training manual in a way)

I work in Acquisitions at the local Public Library. Basically, I’m the guy who orders the books…which include all of the latest D&D 4E material!

I work in a Human Genetics lab that studies the link between people’s genomes and how they react to drugs.

I wish I could say I make gruesome mutants and use them to help me dominate the world. Alas, I mostly just make sure that we don’t screw up to bad in the lab.

Funny — the largest category so far is IT. How’s that for supporting a stereotype?? I’m a high school teacher…history and government, and I’m proud to see my field near the top of the list. I’m also a bit on the subversive side in the classroom, using strategy board games to supplement course material…these dopey WoW kids think they can solve everything online…try refighting the American Revolution!

Anyway, go git’m, fellow gamers! We’re everywhere!

  25. Scot Newbury says

    December 16, 2008 at 1:46 pm

I only voted once for my primary role where I work – Instructional Developer – I write courseware for a corporate training group.

I just didn’t feel right also voting for:

Arts – I handle a fair amount of the graphics in training I create
Computers – I do automation scripting for a number of departmental tasks and I’m the resident IT guy.

I also wasn’t sure where to check off for Project Manager as I’ve started to fill that role was well.

Maybe we should have had a category for jack-of-all-trades as there seems to be at least a few of us kicking around.

Damnit, I hate it when Dave is right! Originally I made this poll as single selection, but he convinced me to make it them check boxes. 😀

Since I haven’t responded to my own post yet, though my blurb does say it clearly, I work professionally as an Architect, Artist, and Designer.
