Chatty’s First Freelance project

November 20, 2008 by The Chatty DM

Its official.

I just signed a freelance writing contract with Goodman Games.

After a few flip-flops on my part, I (helped by a few people hitting me on the head with a frying pan) decided to plunge forward come what may.  I shall be spending the next few weeks writing (with the help of a friend) a short 4e compatible adventure.

This is going to be my first serious foray in publishing.  Its a small enough project that I feel confident that I’ll meet expectations.  After that we’ll see if its addictive/rewarding enough to do more.

As things stand, I must deliver this by mid-January.  I’m not going to say it (I’m not). Suffice it to say that this project creates a temporary shift in free time priorities… and I sadly can’t blog about it much.

I’m nervous and elated at the same time!

Wish me luck!

Oooo, congratulations! Writing adventures, especially in 4th Edition as I’ve found, can be SO fun and exciting. This goes especially when you have an adventure path you really believe in. Good luck!

AWESOME! I know it’ll be fantastic! (I’ll probably pick it up even without 4e!)

    Good luck man.

Congratulations, Phil! It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

Remember the golden rule of adventure design: “Write what you’d love to play yourself” and you’ll do fine.

@Zach: Thanks man! It’s still find all this somewhat surreal. I’m sure that when I’ll have the nose to the grinding stone it will be ‘real’ enough.

@Michael: That’s very nice of you man! I’ll keep you all posted about the project (as much as I’m allowed to share).

@Greywulf: You betcha! I’m already brainstorming and will share ideas with Dave so that adventure kicks proverbial ass!

Hey Chatty, congrats on taking the plunge. While you can’t post about the experience, you can certainly write about it. I hope you’ll keep some design diaries and blogs with your thoughts on the process and the experience, and then share them once the adventure is published. I’m interested to hear your take on the industry side of things, writing for someone else, and your experience with Goodman Games.

That’s awesome! Rock out, baby! And make sure you’ve got a circle of people to collaborate with when you get stuck. Discussing an adventure’s sticky points can help identify rough points before you hit playtest, and that’s gold.

Knock it out of the park, Phil! 🙂

I wrote a chapter in The Almanac of Endless Traders for Goodman, and it was a pleasure. The editing process was smooth, they liked my ideas and they paid on time.
