The Life of a Suburban Overlord

September 13, 2008 by The Chatty DM

Update: I went ahead and created a website for the webcomic.  You can find it here.  I will update it M-W-F until I grow tired of it or something…

My friend Pierre bought himself a iPhone 3G, installed a Comic Book app on it and started posting possibly the first Twitter Webcomic.  (He’s going to hate me for doing this without telling him).

Have a look, he’s got talent with comedy.

While reading his one-panel photocomics, I got bit by the bug again. I had made 7 comics based on my D&D minis earlier this year and stopped because of the workload.  I loved doing them, but they take longer to make than a 1000 word post!.

However, this new idea of mine is a lot less work intensive.

I installed my license of Comic Book Creator 2 on my laptop and uploaded a few hundred family pictures and I started doing one-panel comics based on an idea I had last year on the forums, it basically goes like this:

What if I was an Evil Overlord living my current suburban life?  What if I was a bit like pre- Evil league of Evil Dr. Horrible, some sort of misunderstood genius bordering on the pathethic?

Now add an Angelic Geeky wife that suspects nothing, a Clone/Zombie/Vampire/Robot son and a cute little daughter with the true soul of an Overlord?

Basically, what if I made a one panel comic series based on the tropes of American family shows and bad Comic Book villains?

I started posting them over here.  I’ll post the first ones (the cast of characters) over the next week and then I’ll update them a few times a week.

I make no prevision, humour is a fickle medium.

Oh and I may work in the D&D minis back in at a certain point… Expect to see a certain Horny Slaad to make an appearance.

Why am I starting YET another project while I’m already drowning in them? I’m not sure… my creativity is running rampant right now and I know I’ll need to refocus soon.

In the mean time, I’m having fun and that’s all that really matters.  Hopefully others will share in it.

Yet another project? Guess you were the guy reading three to four different books while tackling everything else you could imagine when you were in school, weren’t you? 😉

It looks good so far. I want a baconator ray just for my own enjoyment. Yummy, yummy bacon…Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! 😉

I still am that guy… last time I checked I had 6 novels on my nightstand.

I created 7 comics and am almost done setting the web page for it.

Yeah, I’m freaking insane. I need to find a job that will let me work from home.

Better watch out… my sister has been making her own plots for years now. Better get somewhere before June! (Sale of certain doomsday device components are restricted to those over 18, you see.)

Hehe, great idea! I really like to steal that idea to create my own evil comic empire! Muhahahaha!

Hmm, but it seems your project still has some kinks to work out. I see a “This foto is currently unavailable” here and there is a broken image over at your new page…

I hope you’ll fix that soon, the idea is great!

Weird, the image here crashed because it was hosted at Flickr and I removed all flicker images. I restored it by linking to the image at http://www.suburbanoverlord.com and clearing the cache here. It shows up fine on my screen.

As for the broken image over there, there are now 2 comics, one who I entered an incorrect date (all comics must be named after the date they are to go up). I fixed that and it appears OK to me now.

    Still broken on your side?

    Nope! Everything works fine now!
