Chatty DM Gets Commonly Creative

August 26, 2008 by The Chatty DM

As a prelude to opening Chatty Studios (don’t click yet, it will only return you here) and launching Project Kobold Love, I obtained a Creative Commons License for the whole content of my blog (See in blog’s footer).

I chose the Attribution-Non Commercial Canadian license.

What does that mean for people not versed in Intellectual Property management (like me)?

It means that while I own the copyright of all the content I wrote on this blog I allow the following:

You are free:

  • to Share β€” to copy, distribute and transmit the work
  • to Remix β€” to adapt the work

Under the following conditions:

  • Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work (i.e. Credit me for the work: Philippe-Antoine Menard).
  • Noncommercial. You may not use this work for commercial purposes.
  • For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the licence terms of this work.
  • Any of the above conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.
  • The author’s moral rights are retained in this licence.

In other words, feel free to use my ideas, change them, hack them, publish them on your web site or in freely available PDFs. You are not free to take my posts, cram them in a RPG book/ Website and charge for the content (Ad revenues are an exception) unless you talk to me first and we discuss licensing of my content.

In the wake of this, I also registered www.chattystudios.com and www.chattydm.com, just to be sure that I had those URLs ready when I need them.

Now that this is out of the way, I’ll go work on the introductory post of Project Kobold Love.

Yeah, I was taught that success requires jumping off a cliff and trusting that you’ll fly.

Chatty Studios is going to be my carefully chosen Cliff.

Thanks for the word of encouragement.

    Now you caught our attention!

And don’t forget to register http://www.chattyjunior.com – after all, you’ll need space for all Nico’s adventures. πŸ˜‰

Bonne chance for all the work in development.

Yay! I rolled a 20 on making people curious!

As for registering junior’s site, I may very well do that! πŸ™‚

    Merci pour les mots d’encouragement!

I agree with ya Chatty. Chatty Studios sounds like just the cliff for you. I’m in the process of working out The Geek Emporium cliff myself, so I’m right there with you πŸ˜‰

Hmm, I haven’t thought about using some CC license, yet. Currently all the stuff I write is (c) me. Is it possible to release only certain articles under Creative Commons and leave the rest under copyright?

  9. Micah says

    August 26, 2008 at 6:44 am

    @Stargazer:

License and copyright are two separate (but related) issues. When you license something, it stays under copyright, but you’re setting terms by which it can be redistributed.

As to your question, the answer is yes. You can choose a different license for different articles. Heck, I think you could choose a different license for each page or even paragraph.

Just be sure to make it clear on each article which license you have chosen.

You could have a different license for each word if you wanted. But that would be silly.

(Looks over the OGL and notes the exceptions about the words beholder, illithid, carrion crawler, githyanki, githzerai).

I am looking forward to Chatty Studios. Not sure what giving support looks like for a guy jumping off a cliff, but if you want a push off the cliff, or some company when you jump off, just let me know, and I will be right there.

A wise man once said, that flying was nothing more than throwing yourself at the ground and missing. So miss big.

@Micah: Thanks for clearing things up for me.

I have an off-topic question: Why can’t CommentLuv parse my blog posts? Does this only work if the blog in question resides in the root folder?

You say “Chatty Studios,” I say “My interest is piqued like a motherfucker.” πŸ˜‰ I’m very curious to see what you have planned, Phil — and I maintain my ongoing assertion that you must not sleep. You never stop!

Thanks for all the cheering everyone , it makes jumping down that cliff so much easier to have fans cheering you on…

I can guarantee that in the unlikely possibility that should I fail to take off, the splatter at the bottom will be exceedingly entertaining!

Good luck with your cliff jumping! I am looking into possibilities for my own cliff jumping, as I am enthralled by the thought. I’m still looking forward to the e-book project with you, too! (Whenever that is, I understand that you’re busy, as am I, therefore that was not meant as rushing.)

I am very curious, and will be awaiting the time when you unveil your masterful cliff jumping more fully!

Now that’s great. I’m gone for a couple of days, and when I come back, there’s news like that. That’s so cool! I definitely join the curious-fans-camp. And bonne chance!

That license is actually a good choice. I think it keeps the balance between reserved rights and copyleft best.

Human genetics, huh? Think you can get me an upgrade? πŸ˜‰
