Hold Your Breath Wheel of Time Fans

August 13, 2008 by The Main Event

Universal Pictures has acquired film rights to the late Robert Jordan’s bestselling “The Wheel of Time” novel series in a seven-figure deal.

Now, I may have some complaints about the series, but it sure does do a lot of things right.  I liked the idea of a mini series more, but maybe a movie done right will chop out all the extraneous bits and tangents.  Good luck keeping the franchise alive for about a dozen movies!

Every studio wants to have the next “Harry Potter” or “Lord of the Rings”… HP being 7(+?) movies, each of which is almost guaranteed to at least make a little money, and LOTR being padded out to 5. ‘Course, you’re right that a dozen may be pushing it, but I could see it made in around 5.

Harry Potter will be EIGHT movies (out of seven novels). The Deathly Hollows will be filmed all at once but made into two movies. For WOT, I think I would prefer to see some books condensed and combined… especially towards the end the books start chasing their own tail.

If they aim for a long series, they should make it animated so they’re not completely dependent on actors staying the entire length of the epic.

WoT could make a pretty good trilogy. You can pretty easily break the series down into three acts, each of which has a pretty bang-up ending.

When a big studio pays seven figures for Song of Ice and Fire complete with the incest and bloodletting, my faith will be restored.

In similar news, Stephen King sold the Dark Tower series to the guy who did The Mist (which was awesome) for nineteen bucks.

NBC actually optioned “Eye of the World” for a miniseries back in 2000. I agree that several of the recent novels could be condensed/trimmed. I’d also suspect they’d narrow what characters were followed as POV to 3 or 4.

Wow, that is… I don’t know whether to be excited or angered. I mean… man… conflicted as all heck here.

I have more hope for the HBO SoIaF mini from HBO. Its more adaptable, from a company that has a proven track record, and in a better medium (HBO mini series) for epic fantasy.

I don’t care what company does it, so long as they keep Uwe Boll the hell away from it!

Seriously, I’m looking forward to seeing WoT come to life. This should be awesome.

I know many here like animated stuff, so I may be alone with my opinion but, my only wish besides the series doing well, is that it is not animated.

But I can definitely see what Caid is talking about.
