Greetings all,
For the past year or so I’ve received monthly newsletter updates on the progress of the upcoming MMORPG Warhammer Online: Age of reckoning. Just the past week, I recieved the “newsletter you have all been waiting for” and by that I mean Mythic Entertainment (finally) has announced a release date for their long awaited game: September 18th, 2008.
For more detailed information about the release, you can check it out here.
There are a few points worth mentioning here, however. First off, it appears that the game will have a similar subscription cost to that of WoW: $15/month, $42/3 months, or $78/6 months. It would appear as though the $15/month fee has become the standard for MMO costs, but does anyone know of any game that charges more? Secondly, the cover-art for the game looks very nice imo (pictured with this post) and it was painted by a Daren Bader who also does artwork for M:TG. Lastly, the game can be pre-ordered with some tasty benefits which can be seen here. Pre-ordering will allow players to:
- Have immediate open beta access.
- Get a “Live game head start” which means the realms will go live early for those who preorder.
- Get in-game bonus items such as a tent to pitch to ease resting/healing between battles, and a magical ring. There are a total of four different rings which are identical as far as game dynamic go, but have different magic school types depending on whether you pre-order from Best Buy, Gamestop, Target, or a variety of other online stores.
Overall I am still very excited about the release of this game. A friend of ours who shall remain nameless played in the beta test and claimed in very few words that it was unsatisfactory. Personally, this will not deter me from at least trying the game since the thought of playing a Chaos warrior or magus is drool-worthy. What makes me more skeptical is how the recent cut out a major amount of content from the game in order to be prepared for this rushed date. The content cuts included critical aspects to the game including classes and capital cities. I’m pleased that the game is finally coming out, but I was anticipating a release date towards the end of the year (which would have left me enough time to buy a new computer before the game was released). My only guess for this particular date is to have the game out well before the release of the next big thing…..
Thoughts?

Im seriously torn here.
On one end Ive been craving like a true WoW-addict to go back to playing WoW, but have been eying Warhammer as a viable alternative…
but do I REALLY want to go back to MMO’s at all? thats the real question

I beta-tested it. Some of their ideas are good but the crappiness and shallowness of their class mechanics kind of ruins it all. I can think of 3 other MMOs currently available (and popular) that are better for PvE.
For PvP, there are not enough class options. The class mechanics are really boring, shallow, and almost random (which is bad for competitive play).
In good faith, I’d have a hard time recommending this game to anyone.
*edit*
To be fair to Mythic (a company I have a ton of respect for), the game is still unfinished and I’m hoping it will get better. 🙂
