Comment issues: Defensio gets the Boot, Akismet called back in

July 18, 2008 by The Chatty DM

I’ve been having incresing troubles with Defensio spamming my fellow blogger’s comments and Trackbacks.

Since the last thing I want is to create a hassle for readers and delay their comments, I’ve booted Defensio out and reactivated Akismet.

If any of you are experimenting similar (or other) commenting issues let me know at chattydm@chattydm.net.

Sorry for all that.

Does this mean I get to take part in conversations in quasi-real time again when I post from home?

That’s what you get for questioning the almighty Akismet! 🙂

Well, that’s what Akismet got for deciding that I, an admin on this site, was a spammer.

    Twice.

    In a row.

I hate Akismet with a passion.

Defensio isn’t all that much better at catching spam/notspam, but it at least tells me when it does so. (And it has had 93% accuracy since I started using it, with only one false positive [a few false negatives], which it told me about so I was able to correct it.)

So my site is staying on Defensio.

It just pisses me off so much less.

Have you tried Mollom yet? See http://mollom.com.

    @John –

    Looks interesting.

Contains some superfluous stuff, such as captcha. The captcha on this site (and my own) has stopped nearly 100% of in-comment spam, due to it not being widespread. The only spam that really gets through is trackback spam.

    Still, it bears exploration.

    EDIT:

    Sigh.

Might I add, this comment was marked as spam!

    Fucking Akismet.

Graham: I understand your hate for Akismet but I was at the point that I needed to check the spam file every hour to unspam a blogger’s comment. Akismet, I needed to do it once every day.

While Defensio deals with Spam in a better way, even a 99% success rate created a reduced enjoyment of the blog by people like Michael Philips, ScottM and, lately, Dave the Game.

However, it just seems that Akismet targets a different crowd to the same effect… Let’s try to find something else then…

Since it’s Saturday morning I’ll try something:

I’ll turn off Akismet and see if Simple Trackback Validation (STBV) can handle all the Trackback Spam.

If it works I’ll stretch the trial until Tuesday…
