Inq. of the Mid-Week: The Golden Age

March 19, 2008 by Bartoneus

Woops!  Apparently Monday came and went while I was lost somewhere within the house, and so I bring you a mid-week Inquisition.  The 3 people that voted in last week’s poll since Monday, you’re welcome!  Last week’s involved Dave’s rampant reading of excellent webcomics and making terrible family-puns, where he asked which of the classic Smash Bros. characters is your favorite.  The legendary elf/faerie/confused adventurer Link took the lead with 29% of the votes, followed by the sexy Samus and even sexier Kirby tied in second with 16% each.  Perhaps if Kirby stole Samus’ powers, they could combine their fans and beat the green-clad boomerang whore.  Captain Falcon comes in third with a very french 8%, and every other fighter (including Yoshi) got at least some love but none pulling ahead of the pack.

This week I saw an excellent poll over at ExtraLife which I thought was a great idea, informing us and all of you a bit more about our general readership, and so I ask:

Like “I am Superman, I can do anything”?

Hell yeah! It is true that an inherent self assurance sets itself in men around 35… we made it there without dying (for which we are genetically disposed to do a lot) and our we manage to know enough about at least one thing to be authoritative about it… be it Sports, Games, or useless stuff like Quality Assurance and Genetics. ::

Does anyone else find it disturbing the lack of ‘young’ people that read this site. Maybe this is a poor sample for gaming, but if it isn’t then essentially we can assume that ‘new’ generations won’t be forthcoming…

19 here. My RPG/tabletop gaming group, and other players I know, are all in their early 20’s.

TheMainEvent, I’m confident that ‘new’ generations will carry on the tradition, but it will certainly more and more digital. And I’m not talking about the faceless and mechanical Online Not-So-Roleplaying Games like WoW. I still definitely see a desire out there to play entertaining adventures where combat is more than just standing in place pressing buttons, and player-NPC interaction is more than just “What new quests do you have?” and “Here’s the quest item you asked for.” Technology and social dissemination has been advancing nicely; now it’s time for the ingenuity of game designers to keep up! (That’s where I come in… X_x)

TME – I think the big division is that the people who tend to read these D&D blogs tend to be GMs more than just players.

Since, often, the GM is one of the older, more experienced players, I can definitely understand the skewing.

Actually I think that people who read and contribute to blogs are older… and usually at work…

    🙂

    Ah, the double-humped bell curve…

I agree with Graham and Chatty…definitely pretty GM focused…although, it does attract the general nerd base…a good thing to have…

Also, I come here mostly when I’m at work…
