Happy B’ Day Mr. Washington

February 18, 2008 by The Chatty DM

washington.gifAs I can see from the vertiginous drop in readership, this be a long weekend for my American readers.

Wikipedia graciously informed me that this holiday is actually to commemorate George Washington’s B’day (do note that American History is not taught up here in Canuck land).

Well, enjoy your day off one and all. I’m sure you deserve it and a holiday in February is a great idea!

I’ll see you tomorrow morning!

Haven’t they been debating a Canadian holiday in February? Or is that just Louis Riel day in Manitoba. I thought there was something like family day, or the prospect of it.

Sadly, despite being a holiday, corporate greed erases any benefit from a day off in a majority of cases. Most places still have work days. I, for one, am a fan of fewer holidays but having actual celebrations on them. That way the things that they are for don’t get forgotten in the mish-mash of maybe I have the time off, maybe I don’t, and no one actually celebrating Washington’s birthday in any way that gives meaning to what it is about.

I would vote for a ‘February Sucks’ holiday!

(no offense to people who like the month, I just can’t stand it)

Here, statutory holidays are paid for and office/lab/academic jobs don’t try to screw you over on them once you have both feet in the corporate ladder so to speak.

English Canada has what’s called Civic Holiday I don’t remember when… and Québec celebrates St-Jean-Baptiste as the “French nation’s” holiday on June 24th.

Plus our 4th of July is on the 1st… 🙂 So it makes summer sweet workwise…

We have a holiday today in Manitoba. Brand new this year. “Louis Riel Day”.

Though it’s also our uni spring break, so it doesn’t affect me at all.

(And we do get taught some (minor) US history up here (more if you want to take optional courses). We get taught more US geography than history, but we’re still taught the big stuff, especially what affected us as well. In any case, we’re taught more US history than they are taught Canadian history.)

I could totally go for a stat in February….it’s usually a pretty long, sad, damp wait between New Year’s Day and Good Friday (though it’s March this year :D)

Yeah March too gets the boring month vote in my book…

Rain, melting snow and general grayness…. What’s too love? 😉

Kickass RPG session with your buddies?

    🙂

At least the days are longer in March!
