Inq. of the Week: Edition to the Fourth

February 4, 2008 by Bartoneus

D&D 4th - Dungeon Masters GuideIt just goes to show you, if Dave puts up a picture of a giant squid most of the people are going to vote for that entry! Kraken/Giant Squid pulled out the win as most popular aquatic menace, beating out the great old Cthulhu and Dagon. I am personally amazed that the Giant Lobster (sticks to magnet) did not get more love, but we were lacking the ever essential attached music video that really knocks that one home. That or maybe people took the question seriously, not this guy!

We’re a little bit obsessed with the approach of D&D 4th Edition, we’re also sure that you’ve noticed. One of the big things Dave and I have been discussing is the conveyance of old campaigns. Dave came out right away (haha) and said that in no way will he keep his campaign or try to convert it over to 4th Ed. I imagine many of you are of a different mind on the matter, and thus begins our Inquisition:

I plan to create a multiplanar upheaval that will explain D&D’s new Cosmology… I also plan on having a Cataclysm of my homebrewed world that will ravage civilization as it was an convert it to Points of Light.

Or you could just do that “You wake up and everything seems strangely different. You attempt to check on your cottage in the elemental plane of Cheese only to find that the lot of elemental planes no longer exist. Your entire purpose in life has been decimated.”

    Heh. Cottage Cheese.

Hmm… not actually sure at this point. It really will depend on what is happening right then whether we start a new one (finishing the current one first) or convert it over (if we still have a long way to go).

Likely we’ll play this one through to completion, and then start over with 4e.

I think I’d like to be in a new campaign to get some of the feel 4E and the convert over when I have a better notion of the game system and when more books are out.

As the only one in my group really excited by 4E, AND someone who’s been trying to find a way to DM a game, I’m definitely starting a new campaign when 4E comes out. I’ll most likely set it in Eberron (homebrew conversions to start with), another setting we’ve been wanting to play in. A shame Eberron’s update comes out so late…

Probably sticking w/ 3.5 for awhile…but I’ll eventually move on to 4th once campaigns end and I get a hand on the core books…which’ll probably happen a year or so after they come out…

I guess id be excited about it if I played D&D, but with no one around that plays and little time to read the material and learn the game I just have to say its no waves in my pond.

I am somewhat excited, but also worried that too much will be changed from 3/3.5. However, I am still using some 2nd edition realms books for reference in my current campaign. So if anything, I have old books for reference. Just new core.

From what I’ve been reading in the preview books, all of the changes from 3rd Ed. will be excellent ones.

The urge to jump right in with a new campaign is probably going to be too hard to resist. If the transition from 2nd to 3rd edition is any indication, there will be many DMs starting up new games, and few games that make it past the 3rd adventure. Still, not a bad situation as you get to experiment playing with different character classes.
