Meet the players!: Eric

September 23, 2007 by The Chatty DM

Two weeks ago, I sent a questionnaires like this one to my 5 D&D players. I got 4 responses so far and I’m posting the 2nd one today, along with my usual editorial comments.

What character do you play in our current D&D campaign? (Name, Race, Class)?
Cruguer, Hellbred Crusader (Chatty DM: Evil-soul-turned-good reincarnated in horribly scarred body. Damned to Hell unless he convinces the gods of good that he truly repented…. I love the Hellbred concept, pure rule of cool).

What Quote would best summarize your Character?
Thou shall repent thy sins!

What other Role Playing games have you played other than D&D 3.x?
Too many: all the previous D&D versions, Iron Heroes, Pendragon, Ravenloft,
Chtulhu, Vampire the Mascarade, Gurps

What do you look for in a game session to make it a great session?
Beer, friends and hmmmm…? Oh yeah! Playing.

What do you look in a multi-session adventure to make it a great
adventure?
Long term playing and great role-playing with other players.

What tends to decrease your fun the most in a single session?
End-of-work-week fatigue and arguing on rules. (Chatty DM: We have a lot of the first, and thankfully very little of the second)

Tell me about your best RPG memory as a player?
Weeeell, there was that time, with that girl… At first we were rubbing feet and… what? Oh in the game you mean, I see… (Chatty DM: Moving on Eric…lol)

I still have great memories of the time, when I was younger, we
were playing while Camping in a tent. We were also doing farting
contests. Man that was the gooood ol’ time. ROFL (Eric has an obscenely biological sense of humour)

Chatty DM’s take on the player:
Much like his writing, Eric gets directly to the point and is short on details (My writing style kills him, we used to work together). A borderline control freak (he’s a government health Inspector), he’s now banned from touching our streaming music player during our games. Eric is a bone fide Butt-kiciking Method Actor. He likes to play dark warriors with complex issues and nigh impossible personalities and he loves to thrash bad guys. Needless to say that when I suggested he played a Hellbred Crusader, he jumped on the concept right then and there. In my 24 years of DMing , he’s the only straight guy I met who successfully tackled playing a young gay warrior with a group of 32-44 years-old male Geeks. And he managed to maintain the respect of his peers. (i.e. the game did not go in that direction at all). As with all the others, Eric is a good friend of mine. It kills me that we don’t spend more time together.

A Crusader Hellbred is a hell of a killing machine (hehehe a hell of, man I’m inspired today). In close combat, with the stances and maneuvers it is a deadly warrior that helps the other in the group. I think it will be a great adventure. Since we are also planning on going in the planes that will add a new dimension to the games we used to play (did I said dimension, huhu!).

As for the music, you must know that they play lounge, elevator music during D&D. ARRGGGG! I would better like some Linkin Park, Disturb or anything that trash a bit (specially during fights).

Phil’s a great DM and a super friend. I’ve been playing with him for the last 5 years already and it has been a lot of fun. He is really patient with me (lots of distractions from my part and him explaining the rules to me). Also what’s cool with him is that he tries real hard that each of us has his spotlight time during each games. I’ve experienced a lot of DMs in the past (been playing for 20y) but I really like Phil’ style.

    Thanks buddy!

    Cruger,

From a fellow ‘Method Actor’ type, I must give you huge kudos for pulling off a gay (male) character; I’m really impressed. I haven’t seen that done well – or at all! – more than once or twice. Any tips on that one?

I’ve played both male and female characters, probably at a 50/50 rate. The males have always been hetero (with the exception of one, most of his play being online), and the females have run the range, but tended towards straight.

(Game Anecdote! Erica, the 40-year old psychic veteran in post-apocalyptic Wierd West, was stranded outside the fort – both legs were shot, broken, as was one arm. She had been hit trying to save another party member who was also too wounded to move much. The horrible mutant hordes were closing in, slavering at a chance at a woman. Out of ammo, she collapses, and her helmet falls free – exposing her bald head and psyker unit tattoos (psychics in the setting had zero body hair). The mutants all gasp and shrink away, and Erica mutters, “Great, I can’t even get raped…”)

As for music – I’m with you there, needing something harder for combat, but when Pantera comes up in the middle of intense roleplaying, or worse, romance, it’s…a bit distracting. ๐Ÿ™‚

And Muse rocks. This coming from an Evanescence fan.

(Our current music rule is ‘No Lyrics’. For us, we don’t need any more distractions.)

Our current music-list is mostly Headnotic Electro…. It’s really really funny to see all players head-nod to the rhythm and then collectively realize that we look like a “Night at the Roxbury” skit.

Cool anecdote. Looking forward to Eric/Cruger’s answer. ๐Ÿ™‚
