Comics Snap Reviews FCBD (and beyond) 2007

Sorry for the hiatus caused by school, hope to get back on track of these. What better way then to review the Free Comic Book Day offerings? Sadly, I only managed to get my hands on physical copies of a few of these, and it seems to be difficult to get free comic book day issues after the fact! (If anyone knows a good way, even if it means paying for free comics, please let me know.)

Anyway, here they are, rated with HIT, MEH, or MISS. This week’s comics should be reviewed later on.

Amazing Spiderman FCBD: Gotta love Dan Slott, here he delivers a classic-style Spiderman story complete with thought balloons and quip-filled fight scenes. It’s not in current continuity, either, which is probably a good thing because it introduces Mary Jane’s superhero identity. Wait, what? HIT, despite that.

Arcana Studios FCBD: Like usual, a few page samplers of several of their titles. This time, it includes Kade, 100 Girls, and Clockwork Girl. Kade was a fairly nonsensical excerpt, 100 Girls was a complete (but cliched) story, almost entirely in French with subtitles. Clockwork Girl was a prologue, and looks like the most interesting of the bunch. MEH

Battlestar Galactica Season 0 FCBD: AKA When Adama met Cylon, and featuring the secret origin of Tigh’s drinking problem! It seemed like what I expected, which is a complete failure to capture the series in comic book form. And all the characters look like sinister anime versions of themselves. MISS

Lone Ranger FCBD: The flipside of the BSG comic, this one is actually pretty good, as the Lone Ranger does the superhero thing while musing about his philosophy. Also, John Cassady cover. HIT

Bongo Comics Free for All FCBD: The first Simpsons comic there, by Evan Dorkin, is pretty good. Bart wins a contest for an all you can grab in five minutes spree, but finds it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. The rest is forgettable, and the Ralph Wiggum story… uh, delivers lots of Ralph one-liners but no actual humor. Overall, MEH

Comic Genesis FCBD: Worth getting because of the sheer amount of content, and possible introduction to a new webcomic that you’d like. That is, assuming you hate having freetime. HIT

The Astounding Wolf-Man #1 FCBD: It was a good idea on Image’s part to put out the full first issue for free- hope it pays off for them when #2 comes out. I liked the art, and the story of a man who becomes a werewolf (but who has a wife, kids, and a big house) could be interesting. However, as an origin issue, not much really happened. MEH but worth checking out issue #2.

Legion of Super Heroes FCBD: The first issue of the cartoon series redone as a reality-tv style interview. Actually kinda fun, and a good choice for kids. HIT

The Train was Bang on Time FCBD: Eddie Campbell, the other guy behind From Hell, brings us the mystery of who blew up the new train line, killing many. Set during old west times, but not really a western, this looks like a really fascinating piece when it comes out in its entirety. The art style is great, and the story is already grabbing. My only complaint was that the lettering (which looks to be hand done) can be hard to read. HIT

The Umbrella Academy FCBD (and other stories): I was hooked by the introduction page, and each of the three different upcoming titles showcased showed a lot of promise. HIT

Choose Your Weapon Tokyopop FCBD: Pick this up if you want a excerpts from a pile of generic sword and sorcery manga. Or if you have some perverse desire to read some Warcraft manga. MISS

Comics Festival FCBD: It has Darwyn Cooke, Cameron Stewart, and Bryan Lee O’Malley. ‘Nuff said. This is the one I’m most sad I couldn’t find. Good news though: you can read it online. HIT
