Slashfilm has a post up about the rumor of Matt Damon playing Green Arrow in the DC’s new superhero movie Super Max.
What is Super Max, you ask?
According to the description on the Wizard homepage of the movie, Super Max will involve the DC Comics hero, Green Arrow. Being falsely accused of a crime and convicted, GA will have his secret identity revealed, his goatee shaven ( wha? ), and tossed into the Super Max prison for super-villains. The rest of the movie will apparently be his dealing with the very villains he put into this prison, as well as trying to escape and clear his name. Super Max premieres in 2010.
This is my first time hearing of Super Max, and truth be told, while the premise is intriguing, I don’t have faith in it. According to the Wizard article linked above, it will mostly feature B and C level villains from the DCU, which could be interesting… or just downright boring. I’m not much of a fan of Matt Damon either, and can’t see him pulling off GA very well.
What’s the overall opinion? Will Matt Damon make a good GA, or will he bomb? Will this movie be any good? Why the shaving of the goatee and will there be boxing glove arrows? Questions abound.

I think having Matt Damon in it would mean a bigger audience, which is a plus. Of course, I’m looking forward to any big screen adaptation of GA, provided they don’t totally change his character (by making him into a violent fascist or something.) The Super Max script is written by David Goyer, so it already has an indication of quality.

A bigger audience, sure, but I still don’t like Matt Damon, and I don’t think he would do GA justice personally. I cringed when the rumors of him playing Kirk in the new Star Trek film started. To each his own though, I suppose.
I don’t know the name of David Goyer, so I shall take your word on that. As I said, the premise is good, I just hope Matt Damon isn’t involved.

David Goyer wrote the Blade movies (all of them, so take that as you will) and Batman Begins. So at the very least, this guy knows his superheroes. He also worked on Dark City.

For Supermax, including C level villains (and I believe it also calls for some out of control heroes to be in their too) is a GREAT call. For the hardcore geek, the characters will be known, whereas there are a plethora of interesting minor baddies the audience can be sold on as credible in terms of the movie. Moreover, these characters require no ‘protection’ of their franchise and can be sued creatively and unexpectedly. Do you think that if Mr. Zsazsz (sp?) or Brick were to die in this movie it would ruin DC’s game plan? Doubtful, so that will add to the unpredictability of the movie.

I’m sorry, but no. I’m all for being inovative with these characters and I know that the movies have to be different from the comics because you can’t fit 30, 40, 50, 60 or 70 years of mythology into a 2 hour movie (or, as Spider-man 3 has shown us, even into 3 2 hour movies), but this would NOT be a Green Arrow movie. This would be Matt Damon or whoever plays Ollie in prison dress fighting a bunch of lame ass villains. Give him his costume, his fortune, show how a playboy becames a champion of the people. Forget Super Man and give me GREEN ARROW!
Thomas says
I think Damon would be excellent as Ollie. I pick either him or Leo DiCaprio.
