Mmm…not bad…personally, I’ve already been numbed by all the 300 parodies I’ve seen…
Reverend Mike says
You know, I watched 300 twice…and I think it may have had a wee bit of propagandaic influence…what with going out to defend the country against impossible odds against the will of many countrymen…against a bunch of faceless, soulless foreigners…and even if everyone dies initially, we should still send more troops…plus the fact that Abraham Lincoln is on the queen’s side…and there’s a smiley face in the title screen…right under the zeros…
Propagandaish or not…excellent movie…

Rev Mike: The logo is the same one as used on the comics by Frank Miller, which were created in 1999. Most of what you mention is actually from historical/dramatacised accounts of the Battle of Thermopolyae. The faceless soulless foriegners really weren’t portrayed like that at all, my take is that it’s a lot of people’s personal interpretations. The initial waves of Iranians (enslaved by the Persians and sent in as throwaway troops) definitely had faces, and souls. As far as the immortals, we clearly saw what was behind their soulless masks, and albeit they were monsters (not good allegorically) they still had faces.
But no matter what I agree with you 100%, excellent movie.
Reverend Mike says
True, we did see the faces, I’m just saying they seemed a bit dehumanized, just monsters out to kill freedom…and I do understand the historical accuracy of the battle…although, there were many fewer soldiers it seemed…I remember 300 spartans backed up by 7000 other greeks…but all they found were the acadians…most of whom weren’t as good of soldiers…I personally think this parallels with the supposed coalition we’ve formed to fight the war on terror…not to mention the “thousand nations” that are against us…
Plus the portrayal of Leonidus as Christ in the end…makes you think WWLD?…the answer being of course what happened in the movie…
‘Course, I could be dead wrong…it’s all just speculation…and it turns out there are other people who speculate the same thing…and according to Cartman, that pretty much makes it fact…
Reverend Mike says
I’d love to have a t-shirt with that last shot of Leonidus being crucified by arrows on the front and WWLD? written in blood script on the back…

Yea I can’t quite understand movie creator’s need to associate main characters with Jesus. Spiderman 2 did it, completely unnecessarily, and it’s played off as that’s just the way the arms and the body tend to fall. Christian imagery doesn’t bother me, but when the message or association isn’t so clear it begins to bother me.
If my knowledge of history serves me correctly, I believe it was 300 spartans and a collection of a little over a thousand other greeks, I don’t think the number was anywhere near 7,000, but I could be wrong.
steve says
well if you looking for a link between Leonidus and Jesus look no further then the scene when Xiorces and Leo (only his friends get to call him that) meet for the first time.
The scene when xerkzes places his hands on his shoulders and says “It could all be yours, all you need do is kneel before me” and Leos defiant answer is a mirror of the story in the bible of Jesus and Satan on the mountain top where Satan tells jesus that all he sees before him is his by right, and all he need do is jump from the mountain and angels would catch him, to which he replies something along the lines of:
“You first”
the idea of storytellers portaying thier hero character like Jesus is not uncommon, but how they do it can be unique. I saw that scene and kind of chuckled to myself. Like the stories in the bible this story teaches a underlying moral.
Its cool to be a spartan!
wait thats not it…

Honestly, and i say this with the utmost sincerety, 300 is the best movie I have ever seen – no exaggeration. If it’s propoganda used to rally me to kick some (persian/iranian) ass, then it has worked 100%, because i now feel an uncontrollable urge to fly to Iran and stab that greasy weasel Ahmadinejad’s fucking eyes out. oh, and “BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!!!!!”
