Inq. of the Week: Lee vs. Lee vs. Lee

March 5, 2007 by Dave

leevleevlee-copy.jpg

Last week we asked who would win in a fight: the Mutant Master of Magnetism and Manipulation, or some guy in a white dress. For whatever reason, despite my masterful arguments, 75% of you said that the “quasi-god with undefinable powers” would win.

But along those lines comes a new potential fight that hopefully should be less clear cut. A three way battle erupts between three powerful figures: Saruman the White of Lord of the Rings fame, Count Dooku (aka Darth Tyrannus) the Sith Lord, and Dracula of the king-daddy of vampires fame. It just so happens on the big screen all three have been portrayed by the immortal Christopher Lee. Blood will be drank, lightning will crackle, and people will be thrown against metal doors, but who will survive and why?

I haven’t voted yet, because I’m torn and with the three it’s a tougher decision then just Magneto vs. Gandalf. My perception of Dooku is that he’s a big weenie because I was not that impressed by him (and his gay-saber) in the movies, but he COULD go pretty well toe-to-toe with Yoda in the end. Dracula was just an all around bad-ass. Saruman the White should be insanely powerful, but it seems by the time of the books he’s become corrupted and lost some of what he should be. Right now I’m leaning toward Dracula, but possibly Saruman because of the whole -also an immortal god-like entity- thing. By the way, wormtongue stabbing him was just in the movies, right? So that can be blamed on Petey-J and be nixed as non-canonical?

This vote basically comes down to what point in the Middle Earth timeline are we stealing Saruman the White and throwing him into this battle royale. Saruman the White taken before the climactic events portrayed in The Two Towers was even more powerful than Gandalf! Saruman was another one of the 5 Istari sent to Middle Earth, only he was the leader of the expedition and was accounted to be the most ‘skilled’ of all of them (translation: most powerful). After the Battle of Helm’s Deep Gandalf the White basically stripped him of his power, reducing him to a bitter old man and nothing more.

I voted under the assumption that we are talking about pre power-stripped Saruman the White and Dracula as he appears in the film Dracula (from the picture above) as opposed to Dracula as portrayed in other media (including White Wolf games). Dracula in the film was basically pretty weak – he could be destroyed by simple sunlight. Now, anyone who remembers reading The Hobbit may recall that Gandalf was able to magic up sunlight in the middle of the night, turning the three trolls into stone. Now if Saruman is even more skilled/powerful than Gandalf, I see no reason why he couldn’t do the same thing and just kill Dracula right there.

As for Count Dumbkoo, I just don’t think that the limited powers of a Dark Jedi are strong enough to deal with an Istari – and certainly not with the most powerful Istari. So in conclusion, I feel that Saruman is an easy pick assuming that we are talking about pre power-stripped Saruman.

Clearly you have an exaggerated sense of the mage’s powers, as Gandalf did not conjure sunlight at night he simply kept the trolls distracted from eating the Hobbits until the sun had come up! However, the argument does still prove that most likely Saruman would be able to exploit one of Dracula’s weaknesses, as both are equal masters of intrigue and manipulation.

I thought about including “Guy from Wicker Man” but couldn’t find a good enough source picture.

I would posit that Christopher Lee as a James Bond villian would obviously win.

Dracula can be defeated by mere mortals, so he’s clearly the loser of the battle royale.

The other two are a toss-up. The decision for me comes down to Yoda. See, irrational as it may be, I like to think of Yoda as the unbeatable. Dooku fought Yoda to a draw in AOTC, a remarkable feat I do not think (read: have not seen) Saruman could accomplish.

    Yoda for President!

I’m going with Dracula on this one, simply because he’d be smart enough to keep his mortal weaknesses as covered as possible (i.e. keep away sunlight and garlic and avoid wooden stakes and silver/magic weapons to the best of his ability)…if he’s got those, he’s pretty tough to defeat (Con drain can be a bitch)…

As for the other two, I think Dooku’d be the first to die…in the short run after his corruption, Saruman kept Gandalf is some serious pain until he managed to escape…only after being resurrected did the newly sanctified Gandalf bring him down…

That and Dooku was the second gheyest Star Wars villian in the series…Although him compard to Darth Maul is questionable…

And since the whole self versus self thing seems to be picking up speed, try Darth Maul vs. Toad vs. the Headless Horseman…

I’m sorry, but all this ‘Dracula is such a bad-ass talk’ is just ridiculous. This ‘con drain’ business is totally baseless as there is nothing in any of Christopher Lee’s Dracula movies to suggest that Dracula has any such ability. And no, Dracula is Not smart. He is always outsmarted by some mortal and ends up getting killed. He sucks bigtime.

“Clearly you have an exaggerated sense of the mage’s powers, as Gandalf did not conjure sunlight at night he simply kept the trolls distracted from eating the Hobbits until the sun had come up!”

I stand corrected. Upon checking the book you are right; my memory of this particular episode must have been based on the Hobbit cartoon movie (in which, I am quite certain, Gandalf appeared to conjure the sun). Nevertheless, I still feel that Saruman is much more powerful than either Dookoo or Dracula.

Lee vs Lee vs Lee vs Josh? Is a young Saruman more powerful then an old one?

  11. drscotto says

    March 6, 2007 at 6:59 pm

I’m with Josh about the Dracula talk being ridiculous. Then I look up to see he’s got seven votes… SEVEN. Everyone knows that Dracula is easily defeated without having any magical powers right? Everyone knows he’s especially easy to defeat as a male, right?

What is a man? Nothing but a miserable pile of secrets!
