Bad News for Comic Movies

February 4, 2007 by Bartoneus

Lynda Carter in all her glory! In our Casting Call Inquisition a few weeks ago, I voted for the Wonder Woman movie simply because Joss Whedon was writing and directing it. Thankfully the movie only got 2 out of 20 votes in our poll, as the news is now out that Whedon is off the job entirely! This is absolutely devastating, but hopefully DC can pull through on it anyway, or maybe even Whedon was taking it in a direction that it shouldn’t go, I’m not really sure.

Whedon announced in his blog:

I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that’s never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don’t think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.

One of the more surprising things he mentions is that he’d never really decided on any actresses he wanted for the main role in the movie:

you don’t have to link to every rumor site! Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistant front-runner. I didn’t have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script.

(via Superhero hype)

Superhero Hype just keeps dropping the not-so-good stuff with news that David Goyer will not be working on the Flash Movie, that a second Hulk movie is in fact coming out even without Eric Bana playing Bruce Banner, Ghost Rider is in fact not a big Valentine’s Fools joke (no link, just sad sad truth…), and an interview with Gwyneth Paltrow about the upcoming Iron Man movie. (okay so that’s not bad news at all, I just wanted to make it a list…)

All-in-All it does not look like 2007 or 2008 are shaping up to be very positive years for Comicbook Movies, we just need to hope beyond all hope that Spiderman 3 and The Dark Knight pull through, and with rumors of Katie Holmes’ role being taken up by the one and only Rachel McAdams, I don’t know how it could go wrong!

More doom and gloom for comic book movies: Joel Schumaker, “history’s greatest monster”, is said to be eyeing Sandman.
At least one would hope Gaiman would veto!

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH, the pain! It BURNS!

I told you never to speak aloud his full name!

Regardless of his destruction of the Bat-franchise, just about every other flick I’ve seen that Joel Schumaker directed, is good.

Flatliners, Lost Boys, Time to Kill, St Elmos Fire, Phonebooth, The Client, Phantom of the Opera, and lastly… FALLING DOWN (which, is one of the better movies ever)

The man can direct and direct well, and honestly I liked Batman Forever.. if not for Jim Carey’s campiness changing the tone of the film and all that Neon.. it would have been a better entry. Batman and Robin….. was…. planetary alignment of idiocy or something. Alot of the more outlandish “60’s Bat-isms” from that flick weren’t even his idea. The epic neon.. totally his though -.-

Anyway, If the right producer were attached to keep him from straying too far into his color play, Schumaker could direct a damn good film. It’s in the realm he’s good at.

While I agree with you that he’s had some good movies, he’s not even close to my choice for director of Sandman. He’s done “out-there” movies, but I think his style of film-making is wrong for Sandman.

I’ll address Joel Schumacher in about a week…

Batman Forever and Batman and Robin represent some of the worst in Hollywood schlock and firmly fits into the cesspit of 90’s pop culture. Sorry, but no amount of good makes up for those screaming failed abortions of cinematogrophy.

I actually agree with Vince about Batman Forever, and FIRMLY agree with TheMainEvent about Batman & Robin. No amount of good can make up for that movie…
