Though I will be posting this week’s Random Encounter later this evening, I wanted to address an uncontrolled rumor that tons of bloggers seem to be rampantly throwing around. A post on EvilAvatar started stories circling around that EB Games was going out of its way to cancel E-bay auctions of pre-order PS3’s, but thankfully Next Generation has the real story covered like any good writer would have. Here are some excerpts:
Are we canceling pre-orders that appear on eBay? The answer to that is no,” said Chris Olivera, director of public & media relations at GameStop
Some pre-release PS3 auctions have actually been pulled by eBay itself because would-be buyers of such limited supply game systems (see the Xbox 360 at launch) were often left empty-handed when sellers who promised a system at launch didn’t deliver. The PS3 and Wii pre-sale policy can be read at eBay’s site.
The internet public’s reaction in general seems to be very mixed, with possibly the best being covered by Next Gen:
an Evil Avatar poster by the name of “Sandman” wrote, “Every time someone mentions buying a system to sell on eBay it sickens me a little, knowing that the eBayer is taking the system [to make money off of it] instead of [actually playing] it. … Let the people that actually want the system when it comes out buy the system when it comes out.”
It’s nice to see some honest people’s opinions out there, not just crap repostings of ‘news’ with no credit to sources, much less accompanying photos with the watermarks of the sites they were stolen from. Thankfully that’s rare and backwater these days.
