YouTube of the Week: Pink Floyd's Frickin' Laser Edition

October 17, 2006 by Dave

(Awesome animation of famous album covers battling it out. Truly some Critical Hits in there. Let’s hope that we can keep doing this feature, even though it’s about to become GooTube)

Is it wise to put the phrase “gootube” on the website? That might attract unwanted visitors.

I still haven’t learned to love this YouTube thing. I get that it’s a brilliant way to distribute and share videos, but I guess I’m just not that enamored of the medium.

The thing I don’t get is how hard is it to put 30 second ads in front of the videos? I mean, you don’t have to cripple the embedding process to add advertisements. Otherwise Youtube is just gonna go up in smoke, cause I know that I’d be the only person who would actually donate to keep youtube the way it is.

yeah, if I’m starting to sound like a troll, or a spammer, please, let me know, I’ll return to my regularly scheduled lurking.

    Here’s why I embrace YouTube:
-There’s lots of videos on there. This is due in part that it’s really easy to upload any format to YouTube, and partly their “upload first ask questions later” attitude towards copyright.
-You don’t have to download a special player, it works in any flash-enabled web browser. I absolutely hate having to have four different programs just to play streaming videos. (Also, those programs have to work, which often involves configuration, updating, and spyware)
-It’s easy to embed the videos, so I can pick out the ones I really enjoy for you guys to see and post them right here, instead of having to send you elsewhere to view.
-And yes, there is no advertising, another problem with a lot of streaming media. Concerns about YouTube’s longevity are valid, but I think now that Google has bought them, they’ll be ok. Google knows how to take free services and still make them profitable, or at least support them.

The only thing I’d like to see- and again this is more likely to happen with the Google buyout- is to make the videos downloadable. Though there is software available to do just that out there.

I thought about this for a while, and here are the conclusions I drew as far as why I am just not that interested in YouTube and its ilk. Being a less visually-oriented person than most, I don’t find videos a terribly appealing medium in the first place.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly for me personally, it makes my anti-TV Spidey sense tingle–sooner or later advertising will take root, and then the whole thing have really gone to hell. I know it’s not fair to say that, since there’s no advertising now, but I feel like that’s merely a beautiful dream. Maybe transfer has really become so cheap that this can be a profitable venture without advertisements, but I seriously doubt it.

Basically, I’m not trying to badmouth the concept, I’m just rambling about my own personal issues with it. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Abe: As The Game pointed out, not much to worry about there, Google bought YouTube for a huge amount of money.

Excellently edited video though, and the pink-floyd laser to the coldplay head was great!
