I will apologize now for the lack of a Random Encounter this week, I’ve been holed up house-sitting for the in-laws since before the weekend. Have no fear, they will be back in a week (or less)!
Yet another of Nintendo’s excellent properties has celebrated an anniversary recently, this time it’s Metroid with 20 years of fantastic franchisey goodness! Released on August 6th, 1986 (in japan) the original Metroid can be considered one of the more difficult games to come out for the original NES, mostly attributed to the sheer length of the game and the amount of back-tracking involved in getting through it. In the end much more of my childhood was sucked into games featuring the lovely Samus then games with Mario and Link combined! I remember a specific instance of a large sheet of newsprint being filled with a extremely large scale drawing of the image you see to above (box art from Metroid II for the Gameboy). Surely in my youth I viewed the couple of hours spent with a pencil in hand crafting the piece as a labor of love, an infatuation which has yet to fade. Too bad college got in the way of my conquest of the most recent titles, being stuck within 5 minutes of finishing Metroid Prime for the last few years has certainly given me more then a few waking, sweat stained nights.
Certainly in my extreme old-age (somewhere around the 30’s), whithering and blabbering husks that people become at those ages, I shall revisit many of these games anew! Oh the joy that will bring! There is a fantastic article over at 1up.com which really can’t be beat as far as honoring the anniversary of one of my favorite franchises, so check it out!
