Gamespot has finally added the 11 year old classic, Chrono Trigger, to their list of the Greatest Games of All Time. It comes with a nice write up about the game, which was released in 1995 and yet still invokes passion and nostalgia in many a gamer. Possibly the most interesting part is the discussion of the many remakes that were attempted, in 3d, that all seem to have been shut down by Square-Enix. The original game was impressive for its unique art style, bringing in characters designed by an artist from Dragonball Z. Thankfully the writers were not the same.
Beyond that, it featured a wonderful time-travel system that made the game feel like a much more open ended RPG then it really was. Players could go to any of the time periods they wanted to, but the story line was still pretty linear and limited in its content. Nonetheless, I highly recommend that you find and play this game as a much needed deviation from the Final Fantasy mold, plus it was released a few years ago for the Playstation with some kickass cinematic animations added in!
It interests me because it seems like there has been such a vigor over re-creating this game, which featured more polished Super Nintendo graphics than any other RPG for the system really. Compare this to Final Fantasy VI, which suffered from very pixelated sprites and such grandeur it could not possibly be captured in such a limited medium. Then again, replaying any of these games in 3d would no doubt remove much of the charm and nostalgia that comes with replaying them. That said, I will not be surprised if in the next few years the Video Game Industry follows the trend of the Movie Industry lately and begins to rely heavily on re-makes. I assume this furor results from the fact that the Final Fantasy series is still running, while we have not seen any new content from Chrono Trigger in quite a while, but in my opinion the original was good enough to last a liftetime.
Chrono Trigger is still arguably the best linear type RPG of all time….

Wow, I’m just surprised that I didn’t see that one coming…
Certainly I would say it’s better then any of its contemporaries, but what about Final Fantasy 7? Final Fantasy X? Both of those were superb in almost every way. I actually haven’t played many other standard RPG’s in a while so I can’t gauge your statement with any certainty, so I’ll just take your word for it.
I’m not sure I would label it as the best of all time, but I might. My main claim is only that you could make an argument. Given that my statement is not easily refuted aids in its legitimacy.
Surely it is in the top five.

Well as far as linear RPG’s go, I don’t think this is one of the best. Hell I liked Secret of Evermore a lot better than Chronotrigger.
