While I am constantly hunting for new indie music since I have some sort of musical equivalent of ADHD, I have found that I am able to satisfy my hunger by relying upon old classics and familiar songs mashed up in new ways.
What’s that all mean? I’ve found a bunch of albums on the internet involving nerdy stuff remixed in hilarious ways.
The first is an album comprised entirely of Chrono Trigger background music with a rap music overlay. For my money (my 50 cent worth, ha ha), is the mashup with the Gato theme and the 50 cent “Disco Inferno.” That’s mostly because the Gato theme is one of the best songs in all of video game-dom. The “Milkshake” mash-up is also very amusing, though gives me wrong thoughts of Cavegirls.
The second is a collection of “classic” titles played as if they were NES game tracks. (Warning: The Editor of Critical-Hits does not condone going anywhere else on SomethingAwful ever. This is probably the only time you will ever see a link there if I have anything to say about it.) I do enjoy pretty much anything having to do with Bohemian Rhapsody, and there’s a number of other great songs on there, just without the crazy 70’s-80’s lyrics.
The third is Green Day’s ballad album American Idiot mashed up with a number of different songs, including the Dr. Who theme. Definitely recommended if you like American Idiot, moreso if you have an appreciation of random pop songs.
If you’re looking for just straight video game music covers, there’s lots of options. I like the stuff from OneUpStudios. They do remixes of Gato and The Veldt, so we’re operating on some similar wavelength. If you’re willing to hunt a bit more, there’s lots of stuff on vgrmix and OverClocked Remix. And if you want to really piss those guys off, Gamer’s Daily posted a video about how to make your own video game remix in under 10 minutes.
For the non-video game stuff, well, Trekkies 2 opened my eyes to the world of Star Trek Punk Bands. I bought the soundtrack to the movie which included stuff by Warp 11 and No Kill I, and I recommend it if you want to give some kind of Star Trek punk-rock fix, and really, who doesn’t. It also turned me on to The Four Eyes, a band whose concept is nerd, but I seem to have trouble downloading from their site. Maybe some day I’ll hunt down an album.
Anyway, that’s all I got. Hopefully you’ll find some tunes you like, and if you find something you think I might like, by all means let me know.

That’s probably a rant for another day. In a nutshell, it’s personal, and I also feel that the people there on the forums are the most offensive people anywhere. I don’t mean they offend me because they make political/ethnic/sexual jokes, I mean that it seems like their purpose in life is to make humanity as a whole worse. SomethingAwful seems designed to denigrate our society by criticizing everything else without doing anything constructive and attracting those bottom feeders on the internet who want to spend their time being disfunctional.
Don’t get me wrong, I find photoshop friday as funny as the next guy, but the people there that create the content tend to be without redeeming qualities.
