Lately I’ve been delving bit by bit (between FFXI forays and dating, which hasn’t left much time) into Riviera: The Promised Land for GBA. Not a bad little monster, I must admit. I’m not that far, but the characters seem likeable for the most part and the music isn’t bad at all.
Truthfully the only thing I don’t care for is the fact that items have limited uses. Something I’ve never much cared for since…oh…Final Fantasy Adventure or so.
But you do learn skills from weapons and have the ability to learn them in practice matches where items aren’t consumed, which is nice. And different types of weapons produce different skills and attacks depending on the user — Ein’s Diviner hits everything in the front row with a slash attack when Ein himself uses it, but the other characters can only throw it, for example. It opens up some interesting strategy choices when you consider that battles contain three party members and between them? Only four items, weapons or otherwise.
A nice addition, particularly at the price of GBA games. I just have to learn not to power down on a Suspended game anymore. Keep screwing that up.
