Critical Hits Podcast #23: Tomb of Horrors Actual Play (Part 2)

September 14, 2010 by Dave

Running the 4e conversion of the Tomb of Horrors (from the DM Rewards program) continues. In part 1, the party ventured into the Tomb and explored the first hallway, encountering pit traps and riddles. At the end of the hallway, they ignore a certain green devil face (with a darkened mouth) to all leap into a portal. We pick up right there afterward.

As one precaution, there’s a bit of combat in this one. If you’re not a fan of 4e combats, you might want to be prepared to skip through some of this.

    Hey there,

Very interesting to listen to people experiencing the Tomb for the first time. Thanks much for doing this.

One piece of feedback for future sessions you record: there’s a sound throughout this section of the recording that sounds like people fishing around a glass or metal bowl for snacks, and then eating those snacks. It is really prevalent throughout the podcast, and its proximity to the mic makes it difficult to hear (let alone focus) on the dialogue of the game. If it is eating or something similar, I’d suggest for next time you’re recording a session you consider asking folks to eat only during “intermissions.”

That being said, thanks again for doing this.

Aoi, thanks for the feedback. The snack bowl was definitely a problem in this section, and unexpected (my microphone was a decent distance but picked up way more than I expected.) If I remember correctly, this is the only section where it’s really a problem, and we know in the future to try and keep the snacks away if we record- the whole group was new to AP sessions.

I am really glad you did this! I am just waiting for the mp3s to be released before listening to it.

youseph: the MP3 is embedded in the post above for “Download the MP3” version, direct link here: https://critical-hits.com//wp-content/uploads/2010/09/chpodcast23.mp3

Unfortunately, I haven’t found a way to satisfy all podcast feedcatchers in the way the files are posted. Right now the iPod format is the biggest one so it goes first, but I’m looking into other ways of doing it.

I too second the comment about the snacks. I had to stop the podcast because it felt like you were chewing right in my ear. GAH! 🙂

sounds like everyone is enjoying it — at least so far — we’ll see how their tune changes if/when the PCs start failing those death saves 😉 The “Tomb” (at least in its original incarnation) was such a death trap… ah, memories. 🙂

All that aside, it is nice that you were able to incorporate the adventure into your normal campaign as a background story event – thus keeping them involved in the history that (might? / will? ) play a part in your regular campaign…

Anyway, fun to listen to so far…the closing dialogue exchange was classic 😉

I’ll do my best to get this up this weekend. After some seriously negative feedback I backed off a bit, but since there’s been so many requests, I’ll forge ahead and see if I can deal with any of the previous issues.

I was looking for some recent replays, and instead found this 😀 Thanks, it was very fun ans useful for guidance.
