Watchmen Trailer

July 17, 2008 by Bartoneus

If you haven’t heard yet, the Watchmen trailer is out!  I believe it’s showing before The Dark Knight, in which case I’ll be very excited to see it on the big screen at midnight tonight.  But do you really think you’d have to wait until then to see it, of course not!  You can check it out over at firstshowing.net in pretty good quality, and if it’s not there just search the youtubes for it!

To the right you see Dr. Manhattan from the trailer, but honestly you just have to watch it to see everything for yourself.  Needless to say, I’m excited.  I think that all of the characters look pretty much spot on and though the feel definitely reminds me a bit too much of 300 (and I loved 300), I’d rather this not ride on the coatails of another movie and stand as fantastic all on its own.  We’ll just have to wait until March and see!

I didn’t really get a ‘300’ vibe from that trailer. I mean, I got a green screen rendered background vibe, I got a comic book turned movie vibe, but not quite 300. I like the preview a lot. I just hope it turns out well.

Anyway, here’s some background for uninitiated.

Agreed, I didn’t get a 300 vibe either (especially since in 300, there weren’t many special effects around the actors themselves.)

I also expect this to only be an in-progress look, with the final visuals looking a bit different.

oh and as for the 300 comment. 300 had aspects that felt like Sin City so I think with this “kind” of movie its gonna be hard to get away from that.

We did get to see this trailer before the Dark Knight, and I’ll tell you in theater size with theater sound it was nothing short of enthralling.

As for the 300 comment, I actually think you guys are just being dismissive. It’s VERY rare that you can look at a movie trailer and actually tell who directed it in relation to a previous movie, and this watchmen trailer shares much the same look that 300 had as far as exaggerated shadows, everything being slightly sepia-hued, and even the pacing of the music with the action is very reminiscent of the 300 trailer.

I don’t think any of these are bad things, I’m just wondering if it’s laziness or if that’s really just Zack Snyder’s style and we’ve only gotten a good look at it in one movie so far and in the future it will be more identifiable with him than with any single movie.

It’s not quite as bad as looking at the Spirit trailer and saying it doesn’t remind you of Sin City, but again I don’t think any of these are bad just a similar style that permeates them.

Wow. Just wow. Now that I’m very stoked about the movie because of the trailer, I just hope that the movie lives up to the expectations that have been created.

And Bartoneus, that’s a good comment about the look of the trailer. Now that you’ve mentioned it, I can definitely see it. When I was thinking of Zack Snyder, it was the way he would use the original panels of the comic book to be his storyboard. And from the Watchmen trailer, that appears to be the same case. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I remember some of those scenes clearly.

As someone who hasn’t read “the most celebrated graphic novel of all time” yet, I’m actually quite intrigued by this teaser. Saw it twice – once on the comp and once before TDK. At first I groaned at the smashing pumpkins and just kind of watched it as a WTF thing, but the second time through really gave me chills – I hope that it will get some new folks to experience something different!

    “um yay, I guess”?!…

I doubt that Christian Bale is capable of being in a bad movie…

The 300 elements I definitely saw. The Kicking of Comedian out the window with the Slo-Mo and then freeze.

Same when Nite Owl kicks the guy in the jail. It did a slo-mo and then freeze right before the kick connected.

But yeah this looks awesome, I can’t wait for more.

I agree, the teaser is doing exactly as it should :P. What pleases me the most is how it appears they’ll pull off the ever-morphing mask of Rorschach.

“I doubt that Christian Bale is capable of being in a bad movie…”

@Reverend Mike – apparently you haven’t seen Shaft (2000) or (to a lesser extent) Reign of Fire.
