GenCon Indy is right around the corner, the biggest “adventure game” convention in America. Traditionally many new products are announced and launched there.
Before we hear about the hot products of the next year, what game (of any type) that you’ve played for the first time in the past year do you like the best?
I’m going to have to go with Power Grid. Though there have been a number of strong medium-weight to heavy board games released this year, Power Grid seems to hit the sweet spot for my gaming group. There’s enough strategy and numbers to appeal to the more cerebral among us, but also a decent amount of luck and blocking thrown in for good measure.

I am going to agree with Power Grid I believe. Second place goes to Shadows over Camelot, but only because I took a graduate level class and am now an expert on Arthurian Legends.

Shadow of the Colossus is definitely the best videogame I’ve played lately, because the art direction and concept come together beautifully to make a very complete package that is just plain fun to experience!
Out of all the boardgames I’ve played, excluding Loopin’ Louie because it came out years ago, the World of Warcraft boardgame is probably one of the best because it creatively re-creates the better feelings from the computer game, which I view as quite a feat! Unfortunately I have yet to play powergrid, but someday soon, and it seemed the Shadows over Camelot suffered from a lot of problems, most of which is probably that the number of players directly dictates how powerful the Traitor is, which seems unfair to me.
As far as best overall game in the last year, I’d have to say Shadow of the Colossus!

One day perhaps I shall play this so called “power grid”.

Pin the Snake on the Plane.
Not yet released.
But, based on its name, a shoe in.
