The Amazing Graysons: Baby Nightwing?
In honor of our Inquisition:
It looks like the CW doesn’t want to leave a void when comic book inspired Smallville finally ends…
But, really though, I wonder how interesting a bunch of circus performer will be? Surely we won’t have Dick flying around a trapeze for 8 whole seasons? The actor would age past his origin as Robin…
Heroes Season 3 Premiere: Both Awesome and Horrible
The following rant/review contains spoilers. It assumes you have watched the two part season premiere.
I finally got a chance over the weekend to watch the TiVoed season 3 premeire of Heroes. In Season 1, I had found myself watching the first few episodes, giving it a pass for most of the season, then picking it back up near the last quarter of so of Season 1 and really enjoying it. Then Season 2 was abbreviated due to writer’s strike and other issues and ended up not being terribly exciting one way or the other. (The fan theories about it were far more entertaining than what actually ended up happening.)
Season 3 is their chance to show what they can do with a full season that doesn’t have to waste any time on establishing the series. You know who most of the characters are, you know the powers, you know the big players. This is their chance to finally pull off whatever grand plots they want to towards an established audience. Did they pull it off? Well, yes and no. [Read the rest of this article]
Preview: "Dr. Who RPG" and "Starblazer Adventures" RPG from Cubicle 7 Entertianment
While wandering around the GenCon 2008 exhibit hall, one booth caught my eye: Cubicle 7 Entertainment, which had signs all over the booth advertising the upcoming Dr. Who RPG. I’m a huge fan of the new Dr. Who series, so I had to stop and ask about it. (I also remembered playing in a Dr. Who one-shot years ago at a convention run by DarthCthulhu that I really enjoyed.)
Anyway, I asked about the new Dr. Who RPG at the booth, and while it’s not yet available, they were running occasional demos and were able to describe in broad strokes what the game will be like. The idea is to allow any kind of game that you want to run, all under the same rules. While you can do the classic Doctor and companions, you can also have a group of companions, multiple Timelords, or a Timelord, Companion, and Tin Dog. All combination will be possible and balanced within the rules, through use of a FATE points system. [Read the rest of this article]
"Free comic like instant courage — only find it on Internet."
A few pieces of random Watchmen mania (Watchmania?)
First of all, this is genius.
Second, a Chip Kidd-designed Watchmen extras book is awesome.
Finally, while playing around with my new video iPod, I came across a Watchmen “motion comic” on iTunes. Only the first episode is up, but it’s free, so I checked it out. I expected to hate it- it’s kind of like Watchmen as a combination flash animation and audiobook (with one guy doing all the voices.) But it’s all there, including Dave Gibbons’s art, just… moving in slightly awkward ways. But the first time Rorschach’s mask moves around, you can see why someone thought this was a good idea. The first episode contains the entire first issue… so check it out for yourself if you’re a Watchmen fan who has tolerance for adaptations. (Here’s the link that opens in iTunes.)
Why You Shouldn't Watch Firefly
Many, if not most of you, have already viewed Joss Whedon’s Firefly series and the follow-up film, Serenity. This article is not intended for you; however, let me say that I’m sorry. I now feel your pain, because some supposed “friends” convinced Bart and I to view the series. I had many reservations about it, and many reasons for those, but I finally made the mistake of giving in. No, I write this article for the uninitiated (if there are any of you still left out there). I want to get the warning out, loud and clear, to prevent further hurt – DO NOT WATCH FIREFLY. What follows is a cautionary tale, read at your own risk.
Joss and I have a mixed history. The first exposure I can remember came from seeing fellow nerd’s DVD collections and noticing a large amount of Buffy and Angel. Granted, I never gave either series much chance due to a large prejudice against what I felt was a silly concept, and WB or UPN or whatever network it was on. I was mystified by the devotion that people had for these series, but I never gave it too much thought. [Read the rest of this article]
YouTube of the Week: F Yeah!
In honor of the 4th of July last Friday here in the states, I present the above (whose existence I was reminded of by BoingBoing.) NSFW audio.
Doctor Horrible – Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, and.. Doogie Howser?
The mind behind Buffy and Firefly, the Actors behind Captain Tightpants and Doogie Howser, and god knows who else, have come together to bring the internet a free mini-series.
Well, free at first. Go to www.drhorrible.com on July 15th for Act 1, 17th for Act 2, and 19th for Act 3. They will remain free until the 20th, when the series will come down and be made available to download for “nominal fee” and eventually be release on dvd, with I quote “the finest and bravest extras in all the land”.
There’s more the the reasons behind this mini, so check out DrHorrible.com. Read Joss’ letter, and as he says, do what we do best. Spread the Word.
Venture Brothers: Watch It
I’m very happy to say that the third season of the cartoon the Venture Brothers started three weeks ago on Cartoon Network. You don’t know what Venture Brothers is, you say? Well that’s exactly why I’m posting this, to let everyone who just happens to come here but still doesn’t know about this excellent show in on what it’s all about.
Venture Brothers is a very adult themed spoof of Johnny Quest type shows, it runs on Adult Swim which should give you some idea of what I mean when I say “adult themed”. If you liked the animated The Tick series, then you will most likely love VB because the main creator (Jackson Publick) of VB worked on The Tick as well. The show’s title might give you the impression that it focuses on the adventures of the appropriately named Venture brothers, but they are really secondary to their father, former boy wonder Rusty Venture, and his hilarious bodyguard Brock Samson (voiced by Patrick Warburton). The show beautifully blends several themes like fantasy, super-science, and campiness into a supple goo of episodic television content. The first two seasons of the show are available on DVD, but what really inspired this post is the now running third season.
Right now it is only three episodes in to the season, but from just those episodes I can tell that the whole package will be worth buying on DVD. The animation seems to have significantly improved from the previous seasons, and the writing seems to have an extra layer of polish on it. [Read the rest of this article]
